Microsoft published a separate Learning Center article tying Copilot+ PC branding to serious gaming, stating flatly that 16GB was "a must" and 32GB was the "no worries" zone for anyone running newer titles alongside Discord, a browser, and a streaming tool. By early May, after the obvious tension between "you need 32GB" and "our new hardware doesn't have it" started generating pushback, the page vanished. The plan involves a more efficient memory allocator, moving more of the interface to the lighter WinUI 3 framework instead of Chromium-based WebView2 components, and generally being, in Microsoft's own framing, "relentless" about trimming the OS's footprint. It's part of the broader Windows K2 initiative that's already reworked the taskbar and sped up File Explorer this year.
What Microsoft has not provided: a timeline, a specific memory-usage target, or a public benchmark showing how much smaller Windows 11's footprint will actually get. The rollout is planned to start reaching mainstream Windows 11 PCs this fall, via Windows Insider builds first, per usual.
(I want to believe this works. I also want to point out that "we promise the software will get smaller" is a suspiciously convenient thing to say the same year memory got 400% more expensive. Sometimes a coincidence really is a coincidence. This isn't one of those times.)

Linux Was Never Confused About Any of This

It's also overkill if you just want a browser-and-email machine. But if you want a laptop where "add more RAM later" is a screwdriver away instead of a wish, this is the honest version of that promise.
The Bottom Line, Stated Without Hedging
Microsoft didn't lie, exactly. Everything in those deleted articles was true when it was published. What Microsoft did was quietly walk away from its own advice the moment that advice stopped being convenient to give — twice, in the same year, without ever telling anyone why the page they'd bookmarked no longer exists.
The RAM shortage is real, it isn't Microsoft's fault, and the Windows K2 memory work might genuinely help 8GB machines feel less miserable by the time it ships broadly this fall. None of that required deleting the evidence that Microsoft itself, eight months ago, told you 8GB wasn't going to cut it.
If you're buying hardware in this market: buy the RAM you actually need now, because every serious forecaster expects prices to stay elevated or climb further through 2027. Don't wait on a software promise with no timeline attached. And if the machine you already own is starting to feel the squeeze, it's worth remembering that the operating system running on it was never the only option — just the one with the marketing budget.
