Based on my experience, listed below are the core best practices to develop successful data migration strategies;
- Comprehensive data audit: The first step in ensuring you don't carry technical debt with you is to understand your current landscape. Profile your source data so you are aware of anomalies, duplicates, or blanks you don't want to carry forward. Removing duplicates and running a relevancy check allows you to slim down your migration and decrease storage spending. Eliminating unnecessary records not only helps you clean up but also decreases the volume of data you need to migrate.
- Define unambiguous data migration strategy: This approach is the plan that will determine how the project will be carried out given technical limitations and the requirements of the business.
