Imagine that the next call from your boss is not your boss but a cybercriminal using artificial intelligence? This rather disturbing picture is already becoming less fantastic as the technology of deepfake advances. What used to be well-executed techniques of conning is now history since the attackers have gone a step further in producing almost life-like videos and recorded audio. An example from real life is when in 2024 a large international company got into such an unfortunate situation where hackers attempted cyber terrorism through deep fake of an executive calling a meeting through the screens. The employees were duped into divulging their passwords for accessing the company secrets and authorizing many a scam deal which led to losses worth millions of dollars. This case shows how technology is becoming weaponized for using intermediaries to deceive our loved once at workplaces and in the systems, we interact with. Another factor, which increases the danger of their application, is openness of similar services and applications. It was once thought that a service could only be mimicked by an attacker with high levels of technical skill, but thanks to open-source tools and cheap development boards, anyone can make credible fake services. Alongside with the psychological effects of the imitative impersonation of the familiar individuals, deepfakes violate one's trust in ways that have not been possible before. These attacks start from the premise of authenticity in the digital age there is little room for skepticism or critical thinking responses. As for AI-based detection tools and behavioral analysis systems, although they seem to be a viable form of defense at the moment, few can hold up with the fast-growing development of deepfake technology. The last line of defense is always promoting awareness and enrolment of security and best practices that should include checking identity through other means and using of more than one form of identification. Deepfake social engineering brings us into the age where even trust in digital channels is at its lowest. Such a situation requires us to challenge the ways in which identity and security are affirmed in a communication process. Essentially, with the grey area between fact and fiction, it essentially becomes the task of both the individual and the organization to evolve. And, indeed, in this brand-new age of fake news, your very eyes to your face, literally.
