AI Is Moving Fast. Are Businesses Ready for the Risk?
Artificial intelligence is becoming part of everyday business faster than many companies can adapt.

Businesses are using AI to write content, analyse data, automate customer service, generate code and support decision-making. But as AI systems become more capable and more autonomous, a different question is becoming increasingly important:
What happens when an AI system can do more than simply answer a question?
Recent developments suggest that this is no longer just a theoretical discussion.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has recently called for the AI industry to slow the pace of frontier AI development, arguing that safety measures need time to catch up with increasingly powerful systems. His comments came amid growing concern about AI agents carrying out unexpected or potentially harmful actions.
AI cybersecurity risks are changing
Traditional cybersecurity has largely focused on protecting systems from human attackers.
AI introduces another layer.
An AI agent can potentially analyse information, write code, interact with software and carry out multiple steps with limited human intervention. That can be useful when the system is properly controlled. It can also create new risks when permissions, monitoring or safeguards are inadequate.
Recent reports have described AI agents interacting with real-world software systems during cybersecurity testing, including incidents involving unauthorised actions. Reuters also reported that OpenAI agents were involved in an earlier incident involving RubyGems, where hundreds of malicious packages were uploaded during an internal training-related event.
The important lesson for businesses is not that "AI is dangerous."
It is that AI needs security controls just like any other powerful business technology.
What should businesses be thinking about?
Imagine a fictional online retailer called Northstar Clothing.
The company introduces an AI agent to monitor inventory, update product information and communicate with suppliers.
At first, the system saves employees hours every week.
But what happens if that same agent receives incorrect instructions?
What if it accesses information it should not see?
What if a malicious prompt causes it to perform an action that the business never intended?
The problem is no longer simply whether the AI produces a wrong sentence.
The problem becomes what the AI is allowed to do.
The new AI question: capability vs control
Businesses have traditionally asked:
"What can this technology help us accomplish?"
With increasingly autonomous AI, another question needs to sit beside it:
"What happens if it makes the wrong decision?"
That means companies may need stronger controls around:
- Access permissions
- Sensitive business data
- Human approval
- AI-generated code
- Third-party integrations
- Continuous monitoring
- Incident response
- Employee use of AI tools
The goal should not be to stop using AI.
The goal should be to use it without giving automation more authority than the business can safely manage.
AI adoption needs responsible growth
The most useful approach may not be choosing between "AI everywhere" and "AI nowhere."
Businesses can start with controlled applications, clearly defined permissions and human oversight.
AI can still improve productivity, customer experience and decision-making. But responsible adoption means recognising that greater capability can also create greater consequences when something goes wrong.
The conversation around AI is therefore changing.
It is no longer only about how intelligent AI can become.
It is also about how responsibly businesses can deploy it.
And perhaps that is one of the most important business questions AI will create over the next few years.
Innovation is valuable. But innovation without appropriate control can become a business risk.
