Let's be real: when you're "vibe coding" at 3 AM, trying to get a prototype to actually do something, the temptation to just paste that OpenAI or AWS key directly into your main.py is overwhelming. It works, the green checkmark appears, and you feel like a god.

But then you push that code to a public GitHub repo. Within roughly 45 seconds, a bot has scraped your key, and by the time you wake up, you're looking at a $5,000 bill and a very polite "Your account has been suspended" email. I've been there not with five grand, thankfully, but with the sheer panic of hitting "undo" on a git commit that's already live.

Hardcoding is the technical equivalent of leaving your house keys in the front door lock because you're planning on coming back outside anyway. It's lazy, and eventually, someone is going to walk in.

If you're building a SaaS or any AI-powered app, never put API keys in your source code. Instead:

  1. Store them in a .env file for local development.
  2. Add that file to .gitignore so it never touches GitHub.
  3. Use Environment Variables in your production hosting (AWS, Vercel, Railway).
  4. Access them in Python using os.getenv or python-dotenv.

Why is hardcoding API keys actually dangerous?

It's not just about "best practices" or "clean code" fluff. It's about security and portability.

  • Public Exposure: If your code is on GitHub (even in a private repo), anyone with access to that repo — or any leak of that repo — has your "credit card" (which is what an API key basically is).
  • Environment Switching: You don't want to manually change your keys every time you move from your laptop to a production server.
  • The "Oops" Factor: If you hardcode a key and then share a code snippet with a friend or on StackOverflow, you've just given away the farm.

How to store API keys correctly in Python? (Step-by-Step)

Here is the "founder-approved" way to handle keys without losing your mind. We're going to use a library called python-dotenv. It's the industry standard for a reason: it's simple and it works.

Step 1: Install the library

Open your terminal and run:

pip install python-dotenv

Step 2: Create a .env file

In the root directory of your project (the same folder as your script), create a new file and name it exactly .env. No prefix, just the extension.

Inside that file, add your keys like this:

OPENAI_API_KEY=sk-your-actual-long-scary-key-here
DATABASE_URL=postgres://user:password@localhost:5432/mydb
STRIPE_SECRET_KEY=whsec_whatever

Note: No spaces around the = sign and no quotes needed unless the value has spaces.

Step 3: The most important step (.gitignore)

Create a file named .gitignore in your project root. Add one line to it:

.env

This tells Git: "Hey, see this file with all my secrets? Don't you dare upload it to the internet." If you skip this, everything else we do is useless.

Now, instead of pasting the string into your logic, you pull it from the environment.

Line-by-line breakdown:

  • load_dotenv(): This reads your .env file and makes the variables available to the os module.
  • os.getenv("NAME"): This looks for a variable named "NAME". If it finds it, it returns the string. If not, it returns None.

What about production? How do I handle keys on AWS or Vercel?

When you deploy your SaaS to the cloud, you do not upload your .env file. Most hosting platforms have a dedicated section for this.

  • In Vercel/Netlify: Go to Project Settings -> Environment Variables. You'll see a UI where you can paste the Key and Value.
  • In AWS (Lambda/App Runner): Look for "Configuration" -> "Environment Variables."
  • In Docker: You can pass them in your docker-compose.yml or via the -e flag in the CLI.

The beauty is that your code (os.getenv) stays exactly the same. It doesn't care if the key comes from a file on your laptop or a secure setting in the cloud.

The "Gotchas": Roadblocks I hit so you don't have to
