The Art of Editing Yourself Before Anyone Asks You To
Why we hide our softest thoughts behind a joke or a sudden topic change.

You are sitting with someone, the atmosphere is good, drinking tea and having a light conversation, but there is silence in between. Then you suddenly feel like sharing something, like an old memory or a wish that means a lot to you.
You lean forward to share your thoughts, lower your voice, and try to speak, but in that very second, you realize the person sitting with you isn't paying attention. Either his attention has gone somewhere else or he is doing something on his mobile or he is not looking as serious as you had expected.
And that's where the matter begins.
You keep talking, but that strong look in your soul is no longer there; it has changed. You start to fear your own depths. You feel that what you did was a mistake. You try to shift your own momentum. You think that before the other person understands that I am in some need, let me crack a small light joke. You yourself start laughing Then you say, 'Forget it, it's not important', 'Tell me how are you'?
And in this way you have secretly 'edited' yourself. The person in front did not tell you to keep quiet. That person did not say that your conversation is boring. But because of your fear you took this decision.
There are many people among us who do this every day. This has become such a habit of ours that we never paid any attention to it. Sometime in the past, someone must have made fun of something we said, due to which this fear has become a permanent part of our mind.
We have a defense mechanism that gets activated without anyone judging us. We've cut our line short. We've hidden our real feelings in a joke. So that no one can point a finger at us and let us not go into the pain we have already endured.
But the painful thing is that we are punishing new moments for old wounds. First we assume and then hurt ourselves by complaining. The truth is, we don't even convey our message or feelings to the other person. We just close the door first.
We want people to understand our silence, but then we say to ourselves, 'We are okay.' This is how we push ourselves. This loop is what pushes us towards loneliness.
There is a difference between protecting yourself and isolating yourself. It is not necessary to share everything. And it's wrong to hide your good moments and meaningful thoughts out of fear of what other people might think.
So don't do this injustice the next time. But next time, when you feel like sharing something or a moment, keep it in mind and don't make fun of it. Don't edit yourself, the other person might want to hear what you have to say.
