Security researchers have uncovered critical vulnerabilities in PHP, a widely used programming language powering platforms such as WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, and MediaWiki.
The vulnerabilities, collectively referred to as PHP2Shell, could allow unauthenticated attackers to remotely execute malicious code, access sensitive information, and potentially take control of affected web servers.
On October 21, 2026, the PHP development team released security patches addressing these vulnerabilities.
What Are the Vulnerabilities?
The security issues are tracked under two Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs), with a severity score reaching CVSS 9.2.
CVE-2026–109618: A memory corruption vulnerability involving PHP's out of memory error handling that can lead to remote code execution.
CVE-2026–109619: A vulnerability involving improperly retained internal memory state that can allow attackers to exploit previously freed memory and potentially execute malicious code.
These vulnerabilities exist in PHP's core engine rather than in specific web applications. Consequently, websites running affected PHP versions may be vulnerable even when their application code is secure.
What Is the Potential Impact?
According to Wiz Research, successful exploitation could result in:
Remote Code Execution (RCE): Attackers could execute malicious commands on vulnerable servers without authentication.
Sensitive Data Exposure: Passwords, API keys, authentication tokens, and other information stored in server memory could be exposed.
Website Compromise: Attackers could potentially modify website content or gain unauthorized control over affected systems.
Researchers demonstrated remote code execution against WordPress, Drupal, and Joomla deployments. However, the underlying vulnerabilities are not limited to these platforms.
How Did Artificial Intelligence Help?
One significant aspect of this discovery is the role of artificial intelligence.
The underlying flaws had existed in PHP for many years, but developing reliable exploits required complex memory analysis, repeated testing, and debugging.
Wiz Research reported using advanced AI models and security research tools to identify vulnerabilities, develop exploits, and validate security patches.
This demonstrates how AI assisted security research can accelerate vulnerability discovery while potentially lowering the technical barriers to exploitation.
How Can Organizations Protect Their Systems?
The PHP development team released the following security updates on October 21, 2026:
PHP 8.5.12
PHP 8.4.27
PHP 8.3.36
PHP 8.2.35
Organizations should prioritize updating affected PHP installations, identify unsupported versions, review available vendor patches, and monitor systems for suspicious activity.
Temporary security mitigations may reduce exposure, but applying the appropriate security update remains the recommended complete remediation.
PHP2Shell highlights the significant risks associated with vulnerabilities in widely used software components. A security flaw in a core programming language can affect numerous applications, even when developers follow secure coding practices.
The discovery also demonstrates the growing influence of artificial intelligence in cybersecurity, emphasizing the importance of proactive vulnerability management, continuous monitoring, and timely security updates.
