Ghost Fleets, Fake Coordinates, and the Cyber Battle for the Seas
When Maps Lie — The Invisible Cyberwar Reshaping the World's Oceans
For my latest investigation, I analysed more than 160 publicly documented maritime cyber incidents from the Maritime Cyber Attack Database (MCAD).
Individually, they're fascinating:
- Naval vessels appearing where they never sailed.
- GPS jamming causing ships to lose their position.
- "Dark fleets" hiding in plain sight.
- Submarine designers and offshore energy companies targeted by cyber espionage.
- Malware allegedly carried aboard a passenger ferry.
- Maritime intelligence platforms attacked during kinetic operations.
- Underwater sensors quietly reshaping the intelligence battlefield.
Collectively, they tell a much bigger story.
The oceans are becoming an information battlespace, where controlling data, perception, navigation, and intelligence is increasingly as important as controlling sea lanes themselves.
Perhaps the most sobering realization came while writing the conclusion. MCAD contains over 160 publicly reported incidents dating back to 2001 — but only those that became public. Without mandatory global reporting, what we can see may represent only the visible tip of a much larger maritime cyber iceberg.
I'd genuinely enjoy hearing your thoughts, corrections, additional cases, or experiences from the maritime, cyber, defence, or OSINT communities.
