Last month, I was in dialemma "Shall I get into AI security. Should I learn Python first or start with the OWASP LLM Top 10?"
I asked him one question back to myself: "Do I want to use AI to fight hackers, or do I want to protect AI itself from hackers?"
Is there's a difference?
There is. A big one. And almost nobody standing at this career junction knows it exists.
So let's fix that today. And I'm not going to give gyaan and leave. By the end of this article, you'll have a score out of 100 — and that score will tell you exactly which path fits you right now. Not which path is trending on Twitter. Which path fits you.
First, the two doors
Door 1: Cybersecurity WITH AI. You remain a security professional. Your job is still the same job — SOC monitoring, VAPT, threat hunting, incident response, GRC. But now you have AI as your junior. AI drafts your triage report. AI summarises 4,000 log lines. AI writes the first version of your remediation plan. You review, you decide, you sign off. AI is the assistant; security is the profession.
Door 2: AI Cybersecurity (some call it AI Security, or securing AI systems). Here, the AI is the asset you protect. Prompt injection. Model poisoning. Jailbreaks. Data leakage from LLM applications. Adversarial attacks that make an image classifier see a stop sign as a speed limit board. This is a newer, deeper, more research-flavoured field — and companies deploying LLMs are waking up to it with mild panic.
Both fields are exploding. That part is not opinion — every hiring report, every job board, every CISO conversation confirms it. The question was never "is there a career here?"
The question is: which door is yours?
The 10-Parameter Self-Scoring Checklist
Take out your phone notes or a piece of paper. Seriously — don't just read this, score it. Give yourself 0 to 10 marks on each parameter. Be brutally honest. Nobody is watching. Inflated marks here only cheat one person — you.
1. Programming comfort (especially Python). Can you write a working script without copying-pasting from ChatGPT and praying? 0 = "I fear the terminal." 10 = "I debug other people's code for fun."
2. Security fundamentals. Networking, operating systems, how authentication actually works, what happens during a TCP handshake. 0 = "Port 443 is… a place?" 10 = "I can explain Kerberos to my mother."
3. Hands-on security experience. Have you actually done security work — SOC shifts, VAPT engagements, audits, incident response? Even home labs count. 0 = only YouTube videos. 10 = battle scars and war stories.
4. Understanding of how AI/ML actually works. Not "I use ChatGPT daily." I mean: do you know what training data is, what a model weight is, why hallucination happens? 0 = magic box. 10 = "I've fine-tuned a model and lived to tell the tale."
5. Maths and statistics tolerance. Probability, linear algebra basics, reading a graph without sweating. 0 = allergic. 10 = comfortable.
6. Curiosity direction. When you hear about a new attack, what excites you more — how the attacker got in, or how the model got fooled? Score higher if the second one makes your ears perk up.
7. Appetite for research and ambiguity. AI security has no mature playbooks yet. Can you read a research paper, half-understand it, and still keep going? 0 = "Give me a checklist or give me death." 10 = "Ambiguity is where the fun is."
8. Career runway and risk appetite. Can you afford 12–18 months of learning before the payoff? Fresh graduates and people with savings score high. Sole earners with EMIs and school fees — score honestly, not heroically.
9. Tooling comfort on the AI side. Have you played with LLM APIs, LangChain, local models like Ollama, vector databases? 0 = never touched. 10 = weekend projects exist.
10. Communication and documentation skill. Both fields need people who can explain risk to non-technical management. Can you write a finding that a CFO understands? Score yourself.
Done? Add it up. Total out of 100.
Now hold that number. Don't scroll ahead without it — that's cheating, and clause 3 of this article prohibits cheating.

🔵 Below 40: Wait. And I mean that kindly.
No, this is not rejection. Read that again.
A score below 40 is not the universe telling you to stand out of the race. It's telling you the race hasn't started for you yet — and jumping in now means you'll spend money on courses you can't absorb and certifications that won't stick.
Your next 6 months: fundamentals. Networking, one programming language, one free security course, one small home lab. Retake this quiz in December. I promise the score moves faster than you think. Everyone in this field — including the loudest experts on LinkedIn — was once below 40. They just don't post about that phase.
🟢 40 to 65: Door 1 — Cybersecurity WITH AI
You have real footing. Security concepts make sense to you, you've done some actual work, and AI is a tool you're curious about rather than fluent in.
Perfect. Because Door 1 doesn't need AI fluency — it needs security judgment plus AI literacy. You'll learn to prompt well, to automate triage, to let AI draft while you decide. Your existing experience is not sunk cost here; it's the entire foundation. The market is desperately short of security people who can genuinely work with AI instead of fearing it or worshipping it.
Honest truth? This is where 80% of readers should go. And there's zero shame in it — this door has more jobs, faster entry, and immediate salary impact.
🟠 Above 65: Door 2 — AI Cybersecurity
You have strong fundamentals, real hands-on depth, genuine comfort with how models work, and the stomach for a field where the textbooks are still being written.
Welcome to the frontier. Adversarial ML, LLM red-teaming, model supply chain security, AI governance frameworks — this field has fewer people, harder problems, and (consequently) eye-watering demand from every company that just deployed a chatbot and is now lying awake wondering what it might leak.
It's a longer climb. But you scored above 65 precisely because you're built for longer climbs.
One last thing before you go
This is not a one-time exam. Your score today is a photograph, not a tattoo. The doors stay open. You can walk through one now and the other one later.
But you can't walk through either while standing at the junction taking screenshots of "Top 10 AI Security Skills for 2026" posts.
