From manual testing to scripts, automation, and now AI β bug bounty has always rewarded the hunters who adapt. The tools keep changing, the distractions keep changing, but research, mindset, and knowing how to use your tools still decide who finds the bounty.
TL;DR β‘
Bug bounty was difficult before AI, and it is still difficult now.
The difference is the weaponry.
Earlier, hunters relied on manual testing. Then came scripts, private tools, VPS setups, scanners, and automation. Now AI can analyze code, help write scripts, understand APIs, organize recon, and accelerate research.
But the same pattern continues:
Before: "Share your methodology." Then: "Share your automation." Now: "Which model? Share the prompt." π
The problem is not always the lack of a better tool.
Sometimes the real problem is not knowing how to use the tool you already have.
A Ferrari is useless if you still drive it like your old car.
AI will not replace research.
It will amplify the researcher who knows how to use it.
Same hunt. Better weapons. Smarter hunter.
π°οΈ Bug Bounty Has Always Changed
Bug bounty roughly evolved like this:
Manual Testing
β
Tools & Scripts
β
Automation
β
AI-Assisted Hunting π€Manual Testing
β
Tools & Scripts
β
Automation
β
AI-Assisted Hunting π€In the beginning, researchers did almost everything manually.
Then people started building scripts, Burp extensions, scanners, VPS setups, recon tools, and automation pipelines.
Today we have AI.
AI can help with:
- JavaScript analysis
- API understanding
- writing scripts
- recon analysis
- comparing HTTP requests
- understanding unfamiliar code
- organizing large attack surfaces
- generating research ideas
That is a huge upgrade.
But having AI does not automatically mean having bugs.
π The Old "Methodology Please" Is Now "Prompt Please"
Before AI:
"Please share your methodology."
Now:
"Please share your prompt."
Someone posts a $100K bounty screenshot and the first comment is:
"Which model?"
My friendβ¦ the model is probably not the reason he earned $100K. π
He may understand how to select targets, what data to give AI, what to ignore, how to verify output, when the model is hallucinating, and where to dig deeper.
You can copy the exact same prompt and still find nothing.
A prompt is not a methodology.
π€ AI Companies Are Racing Too
AI companies are releasing models constantly.
One model is better at coding.
Another is cheaper.
Another gives free access.
Another launches next week and suddenly everyone starts using that.
So when someone tells you:
"I used Model X."
Do not treat Model X like some holy secret. π
Maybe 10 days later the same hunter is using Model Y.
Meanwhile, you are still paying for Model X and thinking:
"I bought the same model. Why am I not getting bugs?"
Then comes:
"Maybe he lied."
And finally:
"AI bug bounty is fake." π
The problem was believing the model name was the strategy.
ποΈ You Bought a Ferrariβ¦ But You Still Drive at 120
Imagine your old car could only do around 120 km/h.
Then somebody gives you a Ferrari capable of much more.
But you still drive it exactly like your old car.
Same speed.
Same technique.
Same mindset.
Then you say:
"What is so special about Ferrari? My old car also did 120."
π
The Ferrari is not the problem.
You never learned how to use it.
The same thing happens with AI.
People get access to powerful models and ask:
"Find me a bug."
AI gives a generic answer.
Then:
"AI is useless."
Maybe AI is not useless.
Maybe you are still using a Ferrari like your old car.
π― Bug Bounty Is Research
Bug bounty does not mean you need ten certificates or a computer science degree.
It means you need a research mindset.
Ask:
- Why does this endpoint exist?
- Who should access it?
- What changes between users?
- What changes between roles?
- What is the application assuming?
- Can that assumption be broken?
- What functionality is everyone else ignoring?
That is research.
AI can make that research faster.
But you still need to decide where to look.
π Pick a Target and Actually Learn It
A common workflow looks like this:
Target A β Nothing
Target B β Nothing
Target C β Nothing
Target D β βBug bounty is deadβTarget A β Nothing
Target B β Nothing
Target C β Nothing
Target D β βBug bounty is deadβπ
Maybe the problem is not bug bounty.
Maybe you never stayed long enough to understand the application.
Learn the target:
- authentication
- roles
- APIs
- JavaScript
- business logic
- integrations
- account states
- hidden features
- legacy features
Then combine that knowledge with AI.
That is where things get interesting.
π§ Some Hunters Became Better Because of AI
There were researchers who were not great at scripting or automation before.
Then AI arrived.
Suddenly they could:
β Write scripts β Understand JavaScript β Debug tools β Analyze APIs β Build small automation β Process recon data
And some started earning much more.
Why?
Because they adapted to the new era.
They did not suddenly become senior developers.
They simply learned how to use the tools available today.
That itself is a skill.
π Distraction Existed Before AI Too
Before AI:
New GitHub tool! New scanner! New recon framework! New Burp extension!
Install everything.
Use nothing properly.
Result:
60 tools
5 VPS servers
0 bugs π60 tools
5 VPS servers
0 bugs πToday:
New model! New agent! New AI IDE! New MCP! New benchmark!
Same distraction.
Different packaging.
Model-hopping is becoming the new tool-hopping.
π¦ A Hunter Needs Better Weapons
There is a reason we call ourselves bug bounty hunters.
Imagine entering a dark cave to face a lion with only a stone in your hand.
No light.
No map.
No strategy.
No equipment.
You hear the lion roarβ¦
Game over. π
Now imagine you have:
- visibility
- knowledge
- traps
- strategy
- proper equipment
The lion is still dangerous.
But now you are prepared.
That is what good tools do.
Burp, automation, scripts, AI, agents β they are your equipment.
Better tools do not replace the hunter.
They make a good hunter more effective.
ποΈ AI Slop Is Becoming a Real Problem
There is another side to AI.
It can turn a weak finding into a beautiful report in seconds.
You give AI something tiny and ask:
"Write this as a critical vulnerability."
Suddenly:
CVSS 9.8 Critical Impact Enterprise Compromise Massive Business Risk π
And the actual issue is:
Missing security header.
Programs now receive more:
- P4s
- P5s
- false positives
- scanner output
- speculative reports
- AI-generated nonsense
That creates more work for triage teams.
And when inboxes are full of noise, real P1/P0 findings naturally stand out more.
β‘ AI Can Find P1s Too β But So Can Everyone Else
AI absolutely can help find serious vulnerabilities.
But imagine:
100 researchers.
Same target.
Same JavaScript.
Same popular model.
Similar prompt.
AI notices the same suspicious endpoint.
Everyone tests it.
One person reports first.
Everyone else:
Duplicate._ π_
AI made you faster.
It also made your competition faster.
That is why your edge cannot simply be:
"I use AI."
Everyone uses AI.
Your edge is how you use it.
π‘ Final Thought
Bug bounty success has always belonged to people who move with the era.
Manual era? Learn manual testing.
Tooling era? Learn tools.
Automation era? Learn automation.
AI era? Learn AI.
You do not need to know everything.
You do not need the most expensive model.
You do not need someone else's magical prompt.
You need to:
π― Pick a target π§ Research it π Understand it π€ Use AI properly βοΈ Build your workflow β Verify everything π Keep adapting
The world is changing.
Your mindset should change too.
Your techniques should change too.
Your tools should change too.
Otherwise, you will buy a Ferrariβ¦
β¦and keep driving it at 120. π
Move With the Bug Bounty Era π
Same hunt. Better weapons. Smarter hunter.
