Hello readers, I have been MIA for a month now. I am back with new stories and studies. October is an important month for us in the security domain, as it's the month of awareness of cyber threats.
Why do we observe Cybersecurity Awareness Month?
This campaign started in 2004 as a collaboration between the U.S. government and industry. Since then, every October, it has been designed to provide individuals with the tools needed to keep safe online (as per NIST). This campaign is observed all around the world, and the key pieces of advice haven't even changed in over 20 years
- Strong passwords
- Multifactor authentication
- Detecting phishing
- Keeping software up-to-date
Every year the campaign gets a fresh theme as well. The theme for the campaign in 2026 for the U.S. will be:
"Securing the Next 250" is CISA's theme, tied to America's 250th anniversary.
Highlighting the India Angle. The Indian counterpart to this event is called "National Cyber Security Awareness Month", celebrated each October by CERT-In, which operates under the MeitY. This year's theme for CERT-In is
"Build a Culture of Cyber Hygiene", under the hashtag "#CyberHygieneOurCulture".
This year, CERT-In has released an AI Awareness Guide, Cyber Smart Classroom Booklet, and Do's and Don'ts Guide. Some are also available in multiple languages.
The Significance.
The Forbes article by Chuck Brooks argues that 2026 is a turning point and that being aware is no longer enough. Shifts highlighted:
