Before Sending Data, Computers First Say “Hello”
Our packet has finally reached Google’s network.

After travelling through your home router, your ISP, and several other networks, it has arrived at its destination.
You might think Google immediately starts sending the webpage back.
But that's not what happens.
Before any meaningful data is exchanged…
The two computers have a short conversation.
It's a conversation so small that most people never notice it.
Yet it happens billions of times every day across the Internet.
Why?
Because just like humans…
Computers don't start talking without first making sure someone is listening.
Imagine Making a Phone Call
Suppose you call your friend.
The phone rings.
Your friend answers.
You don't immediately start speaking.
Instead, the conversation usually begins like this.
"Hello?"
"Hi! Can you hear me?"
"Yes."
Only after both people know the connection is working does the real conversation begin.
Imagine skipping that part.
You start talking immediately.
But what if the other person never answered the phone?
Everything you said would be lost.
Computers face exactly the same problem.
What If Google Isn't Ready?
Imagine your computer starts sending thousands of packets.
But Google's server is temporarily offline.
Or maybe the network connection failed.
Your computer would waste time sending information that nobody receives.
Instead, it first asks a simple question.
"Are you there?"
If Google replies,
"Yes, I'm here."
Only then does the real communication begin.
Three Tiny Messages
This introduction happens in three simple steps.
Your computer says:
"Hello, I'd like to talk."
Google replies:
"Hello! I'm ready."
Your computer answers:
"Great. Let's begin."
That's it.
Three tiny messages.
No webpage yet.
No search results.
No videos.
No photos.
Just both computers confirming they're ready to communicate.
The Technical Name
Networking gives this conversation a technical name.
It's called the TCP Three-Way Handshake.
If you've ever seen the words:
- SYN
- SYN-ACK
- ACK
Don't worry.
They're simply names for those three messages.
Think of them like this:
SYN
"Can we start talking?"
SYN-ACK
"Yes. I can hear you."
ACK
"Perfect. Let's begin."
Once you understand the conversation, the technical terms become much easier to remember.
Why Three Messages?
You might wonder…
Why not just send one message?
Imagine shouting across a river,
"Can you hear me?"
You hear nothing.
Did the other person ignore you?
Were they not there?
Did your voice fail to reach them?
You don't know.
Now imagine they reply,
"Yes!"
You answer,
"Great!"
Now both of you know the communication works in both directions.
That's exactly what computers are confirming.
Not just that one computer can send.
But that both computers can send and receive successfully.
The Conversation Can Finally Begin
The handshake is complete.
Both computers know the connection is working.
Now your browser is finally allowed to ask for Google's homepage.
Only now does the real request begin.
Your computer sends a message that says something very similar to:
"Please send me the webpage for www.google.com."
Google receives the request.
And for the first time in our journey…
It starts preparing the webpage you'll soon see on your screen.
But There's One More Question
Think about everything we've done so far.
Our packet has crossed multiple networks.
It has reached Google.
The two computers have introduced themselves.
Communication has officially begun.
But imagine sending your bank password over the Internet.
Or your credit card details.
Or a private message.
What if someone secretly reads those packets while they're travelling?
How can two computers communicate safely across a network used by billions of people?
The answer lies in one of the most important inventions in modern networking:
Encryption.
