Luke Howard was a pharmacist and amateur meteorologist with a broad interest in science. In 1802, he published a classification system for clouds, which earned him the titles "Godfather of Clouds" and "Namer of Clouds."
Howard system is simple because of it's simplicity. To name a cloud, all we need to care for is two characteristic: Shape of cloud ( which is divided into 3 parts) and height of cloud ( also divided into 3 section ). And with this combination, we can name most cloud
The Shape Of Cloud
There are three fundamental types of clouds we see in the sky:
- Cumuloform cloud : Often called "heap" clouds, these look like cotton or cauliflower, or they might appear as a carpet of tiny puff balls. They vary significantly in height and width, but all cumuliform clouds share a common, puffy edge. Their proportions can change throughout the day, often appearing wider than they are tall in the morning and growing taller as the day progresses.
- Stratiform cloud : Often described as "blankets," these form solid, featureless layers covering the sky. One can rarely see the edges of these clouds. They lack distinct features, though occasionally the sun might poke through them, but mostly they are just solid gray sky.
- Cirriform Cloud : also called Wispy/Curly Clouds These look like wisps of hair, curly locks, or feathery trails. They are delicate and sometimes feature hooked ends.
Now, done with the three shapes, we will now consider the three heights: Low, Middle, and High.
To understand how we designate these heights, Let's look at the structure of our atmosphere. Imagine launching a weather balloon. As it rises, the temperature decreases (which is why mountain tops are cold). However, there is a specific altitude where, rather than continuing to decrease, the temperature begins to increase.
This inflection point creates a natural boundary: the air below this line is the troposphere, and the air above it is the stratosphere. Because clouds primarily form within the troposphere, we measure cloud height relative to this layer.
And of course we have problem here, we don't know what to name anything btw the range of mid and low and btw high and mid ( marked in orange color), so yeah! it can somewhat of educated guess game when a cloud sits between the low, middle and high zone.
Especially, when the boundary of these layers fluctuates based on the season, time of day, and geographic location — it is higher in the tropics and lower near the poles.
Now, we use specific prefixes based on altitude to name the cloud:
- High (Prefix Cirro-): Found in the upper troposphere.
- Middle (Prefix Alto-): Found in the mid-level layer.
- Low (No Prefix): Found closer to the ground.
Now, that we understand the game rules. Let's see it together
CUMULOFORM cloud
"Because altitude affects how we perceive size, the higher a cloud sits, the smaller it appears to the naked eye. This gives us a reliable way to estimate altitude: if the cloud puffs are mid-sized, they are likely Altocumulus; if they appear tiny, they are likely Cirrocumulus. As a rule of thumb, you can also observe their speed — high-altitude clouds seem to drift much more slowly across the sky than those near the ground.
You can also distinguish between them by looking for 'depth.' In Altocumulus, you will notice distinct sections of shading, indicating the cloud has volume. In contrast, Cirrocumulus appears thin and flat. See the difference for yourself in the photos below

STRAITFORM cloud
Unlike puffy clouds, Stratiform clouds are like one big, flat blanket covering the sky. The name tells you how low that blanket hangs: Cirrostratus is a thin blanket high up; if the blanket stretches down to the middle, it's Altostratus; and if it reaches the low levels, it's just Stratus. (When we have low-level Stratus clouds, the sky is so thick that we usually can't see the sun at all.)
Important distinction: No sun in Stratus →
Altostratus : sun will peak from it, but it will appear hazy →
Cirrostratus : Sun will be bright, and one might even see light holo in atmosphere →
CIRRUS cloud
Unlike puffy Cumulus or flat Stratus clouds, Cirrus clouds live only at very high altitudes. Because it is so cold up there, they are made entirely of ice crystals instead of water droplets. They are very thin and wispy — you can even see stars shining right through them at night! You might recognize them as the clouds that look like feathery scribbles, tangled hair, or even little "hooks" that people often call mare's tails.
Even if they look a little bit gray, as long as they still have that thin, artistic, wispy shape, they are definitely Cirrus.
Just be careful not to confuse them with Cirrostratus clouds; if you see a big ring or "halo" around the sun or moon, that is a flat blanket of Cirrostratus, but if you just see individual, feathery strokes scattered across the sky without a ring, those are your Cirrus clouds.
SPECIAL CASE :
NIMBUS CLOUDS: In meteorology, whenever you see the word "nimbus" in a cloud name, it is a scientific shorthand for "this cloud is producing precipitation" (rain or snow).
- Cumulonimbus ( thunderstorm )
While most clouds stay in their "lane" (high, middle, or low), the Cumulonimbus is a massive cloud that grows vertically, starting at low levels and towering all the way up into the high atmosphere. Also called a thunderstorm and it's special feature is of course, precipitation.
Cumulus (Puffy Cloud) + Nimbus (Precipitation) = Cumulonimbus (Thunderstorm)
So, if you see a puffy, vertical cloud and you see rain falling from it — even if it's just a light shower or a distant shaft of rain — it is officially a Cumulonimbus. For them one might not hear thunder and see lightning, But rain is enough of proof.
- NIMBUS STRATUS CLOUD
They appear as a uniform, dark-gray layer that is often thick enough to block out the sun or moon completely. Because they are so thick and spread out, they don't have distinct shapes or edges like cumulus clouds do, And of course they precipitate.
#REMEMBER: Only two types of clouds typically produce significant precipitation. There is Nimbostratus, which is a thick, dark blanket where you can't see the sun, and Cumulonimbus, which is a tall, puffy cloud where you might still see the sun between the towers
SUMMARY:
BONUS CLOUDS
Lenticular Clouds: These are smooth, disc-shaped clouds that often look like flying saucers or a stack of pancakes. They form when air is forced up over a mountain and then bounces in waves on the other side
Mammatus Clouds: You will typically see these right before or after a thunderstorm. They look like a collection of droopy, downward-hanging "pouches" or bubbles attached to the bottom of a larger cloud (usually the anvil of a Cumulonimbus).
They are most spectacular to photograph in the late afternoon when the low sun angle highlights their shape, giving them a very dramatic, textured look.
