1. Application Control: Managing "Agentic" Code
Traditionally, application control was about stopping a user from running an unapproved .exe. In the AI era, this must extend to Agentic AI.
- The Evolution: We must regulate which AI agents are allowed to operate, what APIs they can access, and which automated workflows they can trigger.
- GRC Perspective: Your "approved software" list now needs to include validated LLM plugins and autonomous scripts that act on behalf of your systems.
2. Patch Applications & 3. Patch Operating Systems: Racing AI-Driven Exploits
AI is now being used by attackers to find and weaponize vulnerabilities in minutes, not days.
- The Critical Window: The latest ASD Cyber Threat Report notes that 1 in 5 crucial vulnerabilities are exploited within 48 hours.
- Engineering Fix: Shift from static CVSS scores to AI-driven threat forecasting to priorities what to patch first. If it's internet-facing and has a known exploit, the 48-hour rule is no longer a goal — it's a survival requirement.
4. Configure Microsoft Office Macro Settings: Blocking the Simplest Entry Point
Malicious macros remain a primary delivery mechanism for ransomware.
- AI Context: Attackers use AI to craft highly convincing phishing lures that trick users into enabling macros.
- Strategy: Disable macros by default for all users without a demonstrated business requirement and block all macros originating from the internet.
5. User Application Hardening: Closing the Web Gap
Web browsers are the front door for AI tools.
- The Risk: Unmanaged browser extensions or "shadow AI" tools can leak sensitive prompts or corporate data into public models.
- Action: Enforce strict browser settings that block unnecessary features like web adverts and untrusted Java content to prevent "drive-by" AI-generated exploits.
6. Restrict Administrative Privileges: Treating AI as a Privileged Identity
If an AI tool is granted privileged access to your data, it becomes a high-value target for "prompt injection" or "token theft".
- Least Privilege: AI agents must operate with strictly limited rights, using Just-In-Time (JIT) access and temporary credentials.
- Engineering Note: If an AI can read your entire CRM, a compromised prompt is equivalent to a compromised admin.
7. Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Beyond the Password
AI-powered "deepfake" audio and video are making traditional MFA (like SMS or voice codes) increasingly bypassable.
- Target: For Maturity Level 2 and above, you must implement phishing-resistant MFA, such as hardware keys (FIDO2) or authenticator apps with number matching.
- Identity Shift: For non-human AI identities where MFA isn't possible, use short-lived OAuth tokens cryptographically bound to specific resources.
8. Regular Backups: Defending the Integrity of Intelligence
In the past, backups were for recovery. Now, they are for verification.

- Strategy: Backups must include immutable storage and data lineage records so you can revert to a "known good" model state before the corruption began.
