Automation and AI didn't just change how we work in cybersecurity; they changed how we think about cybersecurity. They changed how much we need to think. Tasks are faster, decisions feel easier, outputs come pre-packaged.
And quietly, the need to deeply understand what's happening starts to fade. Before fixing the problem, it's important to understand what accelerates it. Automation and AI! Both are powerful. Both are necessary. But both can quietly degrade capability if used without the right balance.
Automation: In Control, Not in Charge!
Automation exists to reduce human burden, not replace understanding. Used correctly, it should:
- Handle scale and repetitive tasks so analysts aren't buried in noise
- Execute known, repeatable actions faster than humans
- Improve operational efficiency by reducing manual overhead
In simple terms: Automation should do the heavy lifting — not the thinking.
And here's the catch- when automation takes over execution, humans must retain ownership of reasoning, which means teams still need:
- The ability to investigate manually when tools fail or when data is incomplete
- A strong technical understanding of systems and attack paths
- The analytical skills to interpret whether outputs actually make sense
- Continuous hands-on exposure to stay sharp under pressure
Because when automation breaks — and it will — only real understanding fills the gap.

AI: Assisted, Not Decided
If automation accelerates execution, AI accelerates thinking. It introduces a powerful layer that can:
- Summarize large volumes of data in seconds
- Assist in correlation across logs, alerts, and signals
- Reduce repetitive cognitive workload
Used well, AI allows humans to focus on judgment, not processing.
But there's a critical boundary: AI should be treated as an assistant — not an authority.
AI operates probabilistically. It can be confident and wrong at the same time. That's why human accountability doesn't go away — it becomes even more important. Teams must retain:
- The ability to verify AI-generated conclusions manually
- Deep technical understanding to spot flawed assumptions
- Independent thinking to challenge confident but incorrect outputs
- Ongoing hands-on practice to prevent silent skill decay
Because over-reliance on AI doesn't just create errors — it creates false confidence.

You don't need to go backward or be hands-on at everything again. You just need to stay close enough to the work to understand it, and honest enough to notice when distance starts to grow.
Because in cybersecurity, the moment that tests you won't look like the last incident or the last ticket. It will be the one where nothing behaves the way you expected.
