I'm pleased to share another result from my vulnerability research: a Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability I discovered in FileRise has been assigned CVE-2026–69194 and classified as CWE-79.
The research involved source-code analysis, identifying the vulnerable behavior, validating the finding in a controlled environment, and responsibly disclosing the issue.
Vulnerability Overview

Cross-Site Scripting is a common web application vulnerability that occurs when untrusted input is incorporated into web content without sufficient validation or output encoding.
Depending on where the vulnerable input is processed and rendered, successful exploitation can allow attacker-controlled content to be interpreted by a victim's browser in the security context of the affected application.
How the Vulnerability Was Identified
The vulnerability was discovered during a security-focused source-code review of FileRise.
I examined areas where user-controlled or externally influenced data could flow into web responses and focused on how that data was subsequently processed before being rendered.
The investigation involved tracing the relevant input flow and examining whether appropriate safeguards were present before the data reached the application's web interface.
This analysis led to the identification of an input-handling weakness consistent with Cross-Site Scripting.
Validation
After identifying the potential vulnerability, I reproduced the behavior in a controlled testing environment.
The objective was to confirm that attacker-controlled input could reach the relevant rendering context without adequate neutralization.
Validation was performed against the affected software version to establish that the finding was reproducible and security-relevant.
I intentionally avoid publishing a working payload or weaponized reproduction here, keeping the article focused on the security research rather than providing material that could be directly misused.
Why XSS Matters
XSS can have different security implications depending on the application's functionality, affected context, and privileges of the victim.
Potential consequences can include:
- Execution of attacker-controlled JavaScript in a victim's browser
- Unauthorized actions performed within the victim's authenticated session
- Exposure of application data accessible to the victim
- Manipulation of application content
- Phishing or social-engineering opportunities
The actual impact depends heavily on the application's architecture and the location of the vulnerable input.
Affected and Fixed Versions
According to the published vulnerability information, FileRise versions up to 3.20.0 are affected, while version 3.21.0 is listed as the fixed version.
Users running affected versions should review their deployments and upgrade to the fixed release.
Responsible Disclosure
After confirming the vulnerability, I followed a responsible disclosure process and reported the finding to the appropriate parties.
The vulnerability was subsequently assigned CVE-2026–69194.
Responsible disclosure is an important part of vulnerability research. The objective is not simply to demonstrate that a vulnerability exists, but to provide the affected project with an opportunity to understand and address the issue.
Security Lessons
This research highlights several important practices for web application security:
Validate input: Applications should carefully validate data received from untrusted sources.
Encode output: Data should be appropriately encoded for the context in which it is rendered.
Use secure development practices: Security controls should be considered throughout the application's development lifecycle.
Test input flows: Source-code review and security testing can help identify dangerous paths that may not be immediately obvious during normal application testing.

Final Thoughts
CVE-2026–69194 is another meaningful milestone in my vulnerability research journey.
Finding an XSS vulnerability through source-code analysis provided a valuable opportunity to better understand input flows, output handling, and the importance of secure web application development.
I'm grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the security of an open-source project through responsible vulnerability research.
