AUSTIN, TEXAS — August 12, 2026 — In response to the newly disclosed and currently unpatched "ShieldBreak" vulnerability threatening global IT infrastructure, UBITQUITY, INC., the leading enterprise blockchain-secured platform for real estate and title recordkeeping, alongside NETTWERKED, an organization dedicated to building resilient technological communities, have jointly announced the release of an open-source interim security mitigation.
The zero-day vulnerability, dubbed "ShieldBreak," is a severe Local Privilege Escalation (LPE) flaw located within Windows Defender, affecting machines running Windows 11 version 25H2 and Windows Server 2025. By exploiting a Time-of-Check to Time-of-Use (TOCTOU) vulnerability combined with directory junction (symlink) abuse, malicious actors can trick the highly privileged Windows Defender service (MsMpEng.exe) into modifying critical operating system binaries. This sophisticated exploitation vector effectively grants an attacker with standard user privileges full NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM control over the machine, completely bypassing standard security protocols and leaving sensitive data entirely exposed.
Because a formal binary patch from Microsoft has not yet been deployed to the public, enterprise networks, node operators, and individual workstations are currently operating with a severe security deficit. Recognizing the immediate danger this poses to both traditional Web2 enterprise environments and the decentralized Web3 networks that rely upon them to function, UBITQUITY and NETTWERKED have proactively published a deployable workaround. The organizations recognized that waiting for official corporate channels to navigate the coordinated disclosure process would leave critical infrastructure vulnerable for an unacceptable duration.

The newly released GitHub repository, available immediately to the public, provides system administrators, node operators, and security engineers with a conceptual breakdown of the exploit mechanism alongside a deployable PowerShell mitigation script. By running the provided script, network administrators can quickly and effectively lock down Access Control Lists (ACLs) within common temporary directories across their endpoints. This critical action prevents the creation of the malicious junction points required to execute the ShieldBreak exploit chain, neutralizing the threat without requiring the system to be taken completely offline.
Furthermore, to assist the broader cybersecurity research community and promote open educational resources, the repository includes a conceptual C++ source code patch. This educational component demonstrates how operating system-level privilege escalation flaws are typically resolved using secure user impersonation and the FILE_FLAG_OPEN_REPARSE_POINT flag. By sharing this conceptual code, UBITQUITY and NETTWERKED hope to highlight a path forward for permanent remediation and foster a deeper understanding of secure coding practices among developers.
