We All Want Security, But Is It Worth Giving Up Our Personal Freedoms?
Hi again, all my family, friends, fiends, foes and all of you funky folks!

Dean here again, now, I'm no philosopher, just an old guy with the "around the block a million times or so" experience. So, let me get down to it for just a bit. It's a crazy world out there. Turn on the news, scroll through your feed, or just walk down the street, and you can feel it in the air. There is a palpable sense of dread and anxiety. People are worried about the economy, they are worried about safety, they are worried about their jobs, and they are worried about the future for them and their childrem.
When we get scared, when the ground starts shaking beneath our feet, our instinct is to look for something solid to hold onto. We want a rock. We want a fortress. We want security.
But here is the question I've been chewing on lately, and it's a big one: We all want security, but is it worth giving up our personal freedoms?
This isn't just a philosophical debate for the history books. This is happening right now, in real-time, in your life and in my life. It happens in our careers, our finances, and our personal lives. We are constantly making trades. We trade a little bit of liberty for a little bit of safety. But where is the line? When does the trade become a bad deal and for who?
The Comfort of the Cage
Let's look at the used car business for a second, because that's my world. I see people every day making this exact trade-off.
I see folks who want the security of a warranty. They want the security of a "guaranteed" payment plan. They want the security of buying from a massive corporate lot because it feels safer than buying from a private seller or a small independent car lot.
But what do they give up? They give up freedom.
They give up the freedom of a lower price. They give up the freedom of negotiating. They give up the freedom of owning their vehicle outright without a bank looking over their shoulder. They trade the freedom of flexibility for the security of a contract.
Now, don't get me wrong. Sometimes that trade makes sense. If you have a family and need reliable transportation, reliability is a form of freedom โ freedom from breakdowns. But we have to be honest about the cost.
This happens in employment, too. So many people stay in jobs they hate because it offers "security." A steady paycheck, health benefits, a pension. That is the golden handcuffs. You are safe, sure. You are safe from starvation. But are you free? You are trading 40 hours a week of your finite time on this planet for the feeling of safety. You are giving up the freedom to pursue your passion, the freedom to travel, or the freedom to build something of your own.
The Illusion of Safety
Here is the hard truth that I've learned in my years of hustling, selling, and building: Security is often an illusion.
We think that if we follow the rules, stay in the lines, and do what we are told, we will be safe. We think the government will protect us. We think the big company will take care of us. We think the bank will be fair with us.
But history โ and my own life experience โ teaches us that external security is very, very fragile. The company downsizes. The economy crashes. The rules change. If your entire sense of security relies on an external force, you are building your house on sand.
When you give up your freedom for a promise of security, you often end up with neither. You lose your ability to pivot, move, and adapt, you lose your self-reliance, and then when the system fails โ and it always does eventually โ you are left with nothing but a set of rules that no longer protect you or your loved ones.
Self-Reliance: The Only True Security
This is where the concept of self-reliance comes in. And this is the core of what I try to teach through my content.
To me, self-reliance is the ultimate freedom. It is the ability to look at the world, assess the risks, and say, "I will handle this one all by myself."
When you are self-reliant, you don't need to ask anyone, any company or any government's permission to succeed. You don't need a boss to validate your worth. You don't need a bank to tell you that you are solvent, or not.
In the used car game, the self-reliant buyer is the one who learns how to inspect a vehicle. They learn how to check the oil, how to look for frame damage, and how to read a market. They don't need a "certified pre-owned" sticker to feel good about their purchase because they have the knowledge to verify the quality themselves.
In business, the self-reliant entrepreneur is the one who learns digital marketing. They don't rely on a single algorithm or a single platform to bring them customers. They build their own list. They create their own traffic. They use tools like GoHighLevel to control their own destiny rather than renting space from someone else.
Self-reliance is the bridge between freedom and security.
When you rely on yourself, you become the source of your own security. You stop trading your freedom away because you aren't afraid anymore. You know that even if things go wrong, you have the skills, the grit, and the resourcefulness to figure it out, move on and thrive.
The Trade-Offs in the Modern World
We are currently living in an era where the trade-off between security and freedom is being debated at a fever pitch. We see it in technology. We buy smart devices that listen to us. We give up our data, our privacy, and our location at all times. Why? For the security of convenience. We want the door to unlock automatically, we want the package delivered, we want the map to tell us where to go.
But that data is a loss of freedom. It is a loss of privacy. It is the ability for corporations or governments to track your every move.
We see it in our finances. We want the security of the stock market, but we hand our money over to fund managers who take a cut. We want the security of a credit score, so we go into debt to prove we are trustworthy. We trade our future freedom (financial independence) for the present security of "having things now." (Shiny thing I just have to have.)
Is it worth it? That is a question only you can answer for yourself. But I want to challenge you to ask the question.
Are you making decisions based on fear, or are you making decisions based on a desire to grow?
If you are taking the "safe" route because you are terrified of failing, you have already lost your freedom. You are a prisoner of your own fear. If you are taking the "safe" route because it is a strategic step to build a foundation for future risk, that is different. That is wisdom.
Building Your Foundation
So, how do we balance this? How do we get the security we need without becoming slaves to the system?
1. Diversify your income. If you have one job, you are fragile. If you have one client, you are fragile. You need multiple streams of revenue. This is why I push affiliate marketing, eBook sales, and side hustles. When you have multiple sources of income, you don't have to bow down to a boss who mistreats you. You have the freedom to walk away.
2. Learn high-income skills. Marketing, sales, negotiation, and digital marketing and media are skills that travel with you. They cannot be taken away. If the economy crashes, a skilled marketer can still find work. If you are a self-reliant car dealer who understands the market, you can always make a deal. Invest in your brain. No one can take away your knowledge, and It pays the best interest.
3. Own your assets. Stop renting your life. Stop renting your music, stop renting your software, and try to own your home and your car. Ownership gives you control. Control gives you freedom. See how that works?
4. Build a community. Self-reliance doesn't mean you have to be alone. It means you aren't helpless. Building a network of like-minded people โ people who value freedom and hard work โ is a form of security. When you have a tribe, you are safer than any government program could make you.
The Rock & Roll Mindset
The Rock & Roll mindset is about rebellion. It is about not accepting the status quo just because someone tells you it's the only way to live. It is about turning the amp up to 11 or 12 and saying, "I am going to do this my way, dammit, and you can't stop me!"
But to live that life, you have to be very tough. You have to be willing to face the uncertainty. You have to be willing to give up the comfort of the cage to experience the thrill of the open road.
Security is a nice, fuzzy, warm blanket. Freedom is standing on a mountain peak in the cold wind. The blanket feels better, but the view from the peak is what makes life worth living.
Don't trade your freedom for a bowl of porridge. Don't trade your dreams for a steady paycheck if that paycheck is killing your soul. Instead, work on yourself. Build your skills. Build your assets. Become a fortress unto yourself.
When you become strong, independent, and self-reliant, you realize that you are the security you were looking for all along.
I'll leave you with this: The only person who can truly take your freedom away is you. You give it away when you accept less than you deserve. You give it away when you choose the easy path over the right path. You give it away when you stop believing in your own personal power.
So, hold onto your freedom. Fight for it. And use it to build a life that is uniquely yours.
Keep on Rockin' and make it loud!
