Have you ever handed your laptop to a friend, colleague, or family member and suddenly realized your Instagram conversations were still visible?
Whether you're sharing your computer for work, studies, or just letting someone borrow it for a few minutes, your private messages shouldn't be exposed.
Unfortunately, Instagram still doesn't provide a way to hide chats on the web.
In this guide, I'll show you the available options and a practical solution that I built after facing the same problem myself.
Why Would Someone Want to Hide Instagram Chats?
There are many legitimate reasons:
- You share your laptop with family members.
- You work in an open office.
- You don't want private conversations visible when presenting.
- You simply value your privacy.
Privacy isn't about hiding something wrong it's about keeping personal conversations personal.
Does Instagram Have a Hide Chat Feature?
No.
As of 2026, Instagram allows message requests, chat themes, and end-to-end encrypted chats in some situations, but it does not let you hide conversations on Instagram Web.
If you use Instagram in Chrome, your conversations remain visible whenever someone opens your inbox.
The Alternative
Because I couldn't find a reliable solution, I built a Chrome extension that lets you:
- Hide selected conversations
- Protect them with a PIN
- Restore hidden chats anytime
- Keep everything stored locally inside your browser
The goal wasn't automation it was privacy.
How It Works
Step 1
Open the extension.
Step 2
Select the chats you want to hide.
Step 3
Hidden conversations disappear from the inbox.
Step 4
Protect hidden chats using your own PIN.
Step 5
Without the PIN, hidden chats stay inaccessible.
Is It Safe?
Your data stays in your browser.
The extension doesn't require uploading your conversations to external servers.
Always review permissions before installing any browser extension.

Final Thoughts
Instagram still lacks a proper privacy mode for desktop users.
If you regularly share your computer, hiding sensitive conversations can prevent accidental exposure and give you more control over your privacy.
