Most people think about cybersecurity when something goes wrong.

1. Check your important passwords
Look at your most important accounts.
Email, banking, social media, cloud storage and work accounts should have strong and unique passwords.

Check your operating system, browser and important applications.

4. Review suspicious emails
Look through your recent messages.

Open your browser's extension list.
Remove extensions you don't recognize or no longer need.
Every unnecessary piece of software can increase your attack surface.

Your phone and computer probably contain applications you haven't used in months.

Look at the devices currently signed into your important accounts.
If you see an unfamiliar device or session, investigate it.
Your email deserves special attention because it can often be used for password recovery.

If the answer is no, it's time to improve your backup strategy.
9. Review security settings
Check your:
- Login alerts
- Recovery methods
- MFA
- Connected applications
