Frequent AI use is finally reviving humans' long-standing love of machine man or robots.
1. Our love for machines and robots
It dates back to Homer's Iliad, wherein one can find descriptions of artificial servants and mechanical beings. The historical list is long. I don't want to bore you with more historical facts about our love of robots.
2. Robot romance strikes back
Fast forward to the 20th century. Let's see what Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, and Gen Z vividly remember about Michael Jackson, the last 50 years' king of pop.
His robotic dance moves captivated fans worldwide during his iconic song performances. This imitation of robotic actions wasn't serious; the singer and his fans were simply mimicking his movements. But it shows how crazy we got, walking or dancing like a robot.
Or take the 1974 Television series, "The Six Million Dollar Man." Like many others, I fell in love with the bionic man, a character played by Lee Majors.
I assume the psychology behind the robotic romance was the feeling of gaining instant superpowers to do our work with ease and pomp.
The same is true of AI. It gives writers the superpower of writing in minutes.
3. We are shaping our actions around technology, especially AI
But now, with frequent AI use, this love has moved up a step, and we're showing our mental allegiance to it.
I didn't realize this until I caught myself doing it. I have started formatting and writing my stories here to kiss and please the princess algorithm for better distribution. Long live the algo.
I am consciously altering my creative writing to ensure it's favored by the beloved digital set of instructions.
Similarly, to rank higher on a certain search engine, I know I have to write a certain way to attract his highness, King Google. For Search Engine Optimization (SEO), I have to repeat and place certain words in my content, which can make my text strange. So, for now, I avoid writing for SEO.
If I keep doing the same, I fear I might start thinking like a machine so my writing can appeal to a machine.
I type this story on a keyboard. I use a smartphone touchscreen to type messages or emails. It's been more than weeks since I wrote anything by hand.
If I keep doing the same, I fear I might forget how to write with my hand.
How many times have I talked to chatbots online and gotten angry because they can't understand things the way humans do during a phone call? Eventually, I realized that I need to change my style.
If I keep doing the same, I fear I might forget how to talk with humans like a human.
If I keep connecting with AI frequently, I might start to look like them as I adopt more machine- or robot-like patterns in my thinking and actions. I might get so used to it that I communicate in a way that appeals to machines instead of humans.
I may not become like a robot physically, but my behavior will be much like them.
4. Am I attracted to AI?
Though I have resisted using AI and will continue to do so, I seem to be inching toward it out of necessity, to oblige the social-media-controlling machine language.
So here I am, from Michael Jackson's robotic dancing moves to writing tactics that appeal to machines.
5. Conclusion
You might agree with me or not. But my conclusion is as follows:
By adopting and using AI frequently, I might start losing my human touch.
