A dependable supplier relationship can strengthen operations, but excessive dependence on a single provider can expose the entire business to costly disruptions beyond its control. Learn how to create and manage a resilience program.
A manufacturer had purchased a specialized component from the same supplier for several years. Pricing was competitive, quality was consistent, and deliveries generally arrived as promised. Management saw little reason to qualify another source. Then an unexpected production interruption delayed shipments, leaving the manufacturer unable to complete several customer orders.
Alternative suppliers existed, but their products required testing and approval before use. What appeared to be an efficient purchasing arrangement had become a serious operational vulnerability.
Begin by identifying materials, components, technologies, and external services that depend on a single provider. Rank each dependency according to its importance to revenue, replacement difficulty, typical delivery time, and the consequences of interruption.
Examine supplier financial stability, geographic exposure, quality requirements, and available alternatives. Where practical, qualify secondary suppliers before an emergency occurs. For critical items, consider appropriate inventory reserves based on demand variability, replenishment times, storage costs, and the financial consequences of shortages.
