Have you ever tried planking?
If you have, you know it's not a joke. If you haven't, you're missing out on one of the most effective exercises you can do without any equipment.
I didn't start as a fan of planking.
In fact, the thought of holding a plank for even 30 seconds used to make me cringe. But when I kept hearing about its benefits, I decided to give it a try.
I committed to doing a one-minute plank every morning. What happened next to me in ways I didn't expect.
If you're curious about how this one-minute plank could transform your body, keep reading.
The Importance of Core Strength
Core strength is very important, yet many people don't fully understand what their core muscles are or why strengthening them is important.
Before I started this plank challenge, I didn't really get the whole "core strength" thing.
I thought it was just about getting abs, and I wasn't too bothered about that.
But the more I find, the more I realize that a strong core is like the foundation of everything you do.
Your core muscles are located in your midsection and play a significant role in most movements. While they aren't in your arms or legs, they help transfer force between limbs, enhancing overall movement and exercise effectiveness.
The moment I started planking, I realized how weak my core actually was.
And It wasn't just about getting those "Instagram abs" β I really wanted to improve my balance, posture, and even my ability to carry groceries without feeling like my back was going to snap.
Strong core muscles:
- Improve movement efficiency.
- Help the abdominal muscles, which protect your back and spinal column.
- Help prevent injuries.
In short, building core strength through planking can drastically improve your fitness.
Plank Benefits β What Happens to Your Body?
Planking isn't just great for your core β it great for your entire body.
Here's how:
1. Improved Core
Planks target all major core muscles:
- Transverse abdominis which helps you lift heavier weights.
- Rectus abdominis improves sports performance and gives you that six-pack look.
- Obliques enhance side-bending and waist-twisting abilities.
- Glutes support your back and strengthen your buttocks.
2. Reduced Risk of Back Injury
Planking strengthens your back muscles without putting excessive pressure on your spine or hips, ensuring better stability and reducing the risk of injuries.
3. Boosted Metabolism
Planks burn more calories than traditional exercises like sit-ups. A strong core ensures your body burns more energy even at rest, making planking a great metabolism booster.
4. Improved Posture
A strong core leads to better posture, which:
- Aligns bones and joints.
- Enhances muscle efficiency.
- Reduces back pain.
- Makes you look more confident and healthy.
5. Enhanced Balance
Planking strengthens your abdominal muscles, which are vital for maintaining balance.
Try side planks or planks with extensions to further improve stability.
6. Increased Flexibility
Planks stretch your shoulders, collarbone, hamstrings, and even your toes. Adding side planks can also target your obliques, improving overall flexibility.
7. Elevated Mood
Planking relieves tension in muscles strained from long periods of sitting, such as your thighs and shoulders.
It also calms your nerves and reduces anxiety, improving your mood over time.
How to Start Planking
1. How Many Planks Should You Do?
Start with one plank a day and aim for at least 60 seconds.
If that's too challenging, hold the plank for as long as you can and build up gradually.
For maximum benefits, work toward three sets of 60 seconds daily.
2. How to Hold a Plank Properly
Proper form is essential for effective planking.
Follow these steps:
- Get into a push-up position on the floor.
- Bend your elbows at 90 degrees and rest your weight on your forearms (forearm plank).
- Keep your torso straight and rigid, forming a straight line from head to toe.
- Relax your head and look at the floor.
- Hold the position for as long as you can, breathing steadily.
- Stop when your form begins to break β only good form counts!
My results after 30 days.
I didn't even realize it, but I passed the 30-day mark with ease. What started as a simple, one-minute plank each morning gradually became something essential in my day-to-day routine.
Planking went from an experiment to a staple, and now, I can't imagine not starting my day with it.
Here's what I've noticed after sticking with it for a month:
- Improved core strength
- Better posture
- Increased endurance
- Less back pain (that is really really help me)
- Boost in mental strength
This one-minute habit transformed more than just my body β it strengthened my mindset and gave me new confidence.
What I Learned From Planking Every Day
In life, it's easy to think that certain habits are just about the physical results.
But sometimes, they you know just end up teaching us much more than we expect.
For me, planking every day wasn't just about building muscle β it ended up offering a lot of unexpected lessons.
Here's what I learned along the way:
- Discipline Over Motivation β Motivation comes and goes, but discipline is what keeps you going. Planking every morning, even when I wasn't in the mood, showed me that consistency is what leads to lasting change.
- Patience Is Everything β I'm the one before who wants quick results. But with planking, I had to learn to be patient. The progress was slow but steady. In the end, it was all worth it.
- Listen to Your Body β At first, I was focused on hitting that one-minute mark. But I quickly realized that listening to my body β paying attention to my form, my breathing, and how my muscles felt β made the plank more effective and sustainable.
What I didn't expect was how much planking would shift my mindset.
It became a metaphor for life: sometimes, you just have to keep pushing through the tough moments, because eventually, it gets easier.
