This was a big week for the Midjourney Team. There were four announcements.

08/27/26 — Edit Model for V8

This was the big announcement that Midjourney users have been waiting for — the initial release of the new edit model for V8. (I wrote an article about the new editor on 08/08/26. You can read it here. or …) Here is a link to the announcement on the Update Page. The next day they posted another announcement about an update to the editor.

08/28/26 — Edit Image Quality Update

The text of the announcement was:

Edit Image Quality Update Hey everyone, we ve updated our V8.2 edit model for better image quality. If you've had any issues in the last 24 hours give it a new shot and keep giving us feedback. Thanks! More updates soon.

It also had two images that demonstrated the quality change in the update.

I have included screen captures of the announcement on the Update page of the website.

I posted both of these images so that you could see how they appeared in the browser and on the Discord server. But the image comparison is difficult to see at this resolution.

This is a full-size copy (2000 x 946 pixels) of the image from the announcement. I copied it and included it here because it does clearly show the update quality better than the down-sized images above. (If Medium isn't showing it full-size try clicking it.)

My opinion: I think this editor update is great, and I am very pleased with the initial release of the new editor. I am sure the team will continue to update it and more capability in the future

09/02/26 — A Message about Updates and Work on the Alpha site

Posted to the #announcements channel on the Midjourney Discord server at the beginning of the Office Hours meeting by discord user clkruse.

Here is my summary of the message:

  1. The Midjourney team thanks everyone that has tried the alpha site and has given their feedback and they encourage users to continue trying new things as the site continues to change.
  2. A new editor has been added to the lightbox.
  3. A change Style feature has also been added to the lightbox.
  4. They are still working on the drag and drop interface.
  5. They have fixed and updated lots of issues (bugs and papercuts) with the pills in the prompt bar.
  6. They are continuing to make fixes and squash bugs — it should feel a lot faster.
  7. What's next? setting default parameters, previewing of SREFs in the prompt area, giving more real to the image, making closing settings more obvious/natural.
  8. Use the #alpha-ideas-and-bugs channel to give your feedback. Or go to help and use the Report an Issue box.

09/02/26 — The Midjourney Team Looks for Your Input

A few minutes into the Office Hours meeting David Holz posted another announcement in the #announcements and #vc-text channels. Here is the text of the message with a link to use to submit your ideas.

"Hey @everyone @here we're starting to look for feedback and ideas for what we should be prioritizing and working on next at Midjourney please submit your ideas here and we will do a formal voting session in the next week or two. Thanks! https://www.midjourney.com/ideas?tab=submit-idea"

Midjourney Office Hours Recap

Midjourney Office Hours Meeting — September 2, 2026

Here are my notes from the Office Hours:

David began the meeting by noting that the biggest thing on the Midjourney team's mind right now is the new edit model release.

He very quickly mentioned that the team is interesting in collecting more feedback from users and would like to know what users think that they should be working on next. He posted a link to a submission form on the website at https://www.midjourney.com/ideas?tab=submit-idea.

He said that they would gather the feedback and post a list that users can vote on in the next few weeks.

He encourages all users to submit ideas (and to submit multiple ideas), and said "all ideas are good".

He continued by mentioning some of the other things that the team is focusing on now specifically better camera control, improved editor features, and the development of the V9 model. He didn't give any specific dates for releases.

He indicated that there would be bigger (more sweeping) changes introduced on the alpha site, and encouraged users to keep checking and testing things on the alpha site. The feedback on alpha changes and features are helping shape the development of the site. (This work has already started and is ongoing — with frequent updates and changes — If you haven't look at it or tried it yet. Take a look!)

David envisions a new "create" interface/workflow that will be very different and innovative. He feels this development is a little behind where he would like it to be. Stay tuned — hopefully he will be able to move it along a little.

David started taking questions from the HiveMind software. There were questions about several topics.

A few people asked about selecting a specific area to change in the area without making changes to the rest of the image — this sounds like a version of inpainting — David sent this on to the team for consideration.

There also were some questions and comments about "remixing" and how it works. David admitted that he didn't know everything about the current version of the remix tool, and that he would revisit it this week so that he could better answer the questions.

He also reiterated that there was a version of the new edit model that had more specific camera control but that it was decided to release a simpler version of the edit model so more camera control should be added to the editor soon.

David brought things to a close a little bit after the hour has elapsed. He ended by thanking users again for attending the Office Hours and for supporting Midjourney. One of his last comments was that more new things would be released in the next two months.

Restyling Tests of the New Edit Model

I have been trying to keep up with the discussions and comments that users are having about the new editor, so I wanted to do more tests based on what I was hearing people say on Discord.

So I created a simple AI character to experiment with. Here is my prompt:

To get started I click "Open Editor" in the lightbox sidebar to the right of the image.

And for curiosity I typed a restyling prompt and clicked "Submit Edit".

Nice.

Let's try another plain text restyle. I will follow the same process from the original image. I went to the original and clicked "Open Editor", typed a new text prompt, and again clicked "Submit Edit".

That was fun! I like it.

Now let's restyling from a reference image. I grew up during the 1960's and I remember well seeing Psychedelic Pop Art images from an artist, Peter Max. I found and copied a small section of an image of a piece created by Peter. I saved it as my reference image.

I began the same way by going to the original image and clicking "Open Editor". Then I dragged my reference image over the edit prompt box and dropped it in the area called "Attach to Prompt", and then I typed a text prompt giving directions to the Midjourney editor.

After typing the prompt I clicked "Submit Edit" and here is the result.

This does remind of some of Peter's poster images from the 1960's.

Another artist I remember from the 1960's is Roy Lichtenstein whose art was very influenced by advertising and comic book art. Here is another screen capture (with the well-known "Ben-Day dots") that I saved as a reference image.

I used the same process: 1. go to the original image, 2. click Open Editor, 3. drag the reference image into the Attach to Prompt box, 4. type the text prompt with instructions, and 5. click Submit Edit.

For fun I decided to try restyling with an image of a familiar cartoon character, Homer Simpson.

I followed the same process as above including the exact same text prompt directions. Here is the result of that restyling.

He looks perfect for the "Simpson Universe". Maybe he will appear in an episode on TV (I am chuckling to myself).

I always think of Homer as a clown which returned my thinking to some famous clowns from my childhood days. The first one that came to mind was "Bozo the Clown". Here is a screen capture I saved as a reference image.

I followed my process and here is the result.

Another clown I remember from childhood is Emmett Kelly, known for his clown character "Weary Willie". Here is a reference image of Emmett Kelly in character.

One of the first restyles I did created a muppet version of the original image just using text. I thought I would try to do one more muppet restyle using a reference. I found an image of a muppet who looked a little like Sesame Street's Ernie.

Very Cool! I like it.

I saw a few messages in Discord who said that they couldn't used SREF IDs, Moodboards, or Profile codes in the editor, so I thought I would try it.

Here is a restyle prompt using a style reference (SREF 1059634746) rather than an image.

Taking a Restyle One Step Further

I wondered if I could use the moodboard again and change the position/pose of the original person. So I tried this prompt:

I realized after creating this image that I didn't change the aspect ratio so Midjourney didn't display the full height.

Let's try again.

I took a little bit different approach this time. I went back to the original image and clicked "Open Editor" as usual but instead of typing the prompt right away I clicked the 9:16 aspect ratio in the lightbox, and then I grabbed the corner handled to scale the head and shoulders down a little, and used the arrows in the center to move the original up to where I thought it might be positioned in a repositioning restyle.

This restyle did change the style, the position (pose), and the aspect ratio.

I will keep doing more experimenting.

My opinion: I feel this editor is a good first step to get it working with v8.2. Bravo!

My scraping at the beginning of this week yielded 15 new profile codes. To bring out the natural properties of each profile I used a "null" prompt of ".", a version of 8.2, an aspect ratio of 3:2, and a stylize value of 320 followed by the profile code.
