I Tried (New) Claude Code /claude-api (You Can Now Build Claude Apps 3x Faster)

/claude-api is a new built-in skill for builders — I knew there would be a better way than tab-switching to the docs mid-session.

If you have been dreaming about building Claude apps that use the Claude API, the moment has come.

You can now load the full Claude API reference into your Claude Code session without leaving your terminal.

This is what using /claude-api looks like in action, and for a start, it's a good idea:

What Is /claude-api?

/claude-api is a built-in skill in Claude Code v2.1.69 — It is not a code generator or a scaffold tool.

It is a context injection skill — meaning when you invoke it, Claude loads the full Anthropic SDK reference into your session.

Here is what it loads the moment you run it:

  • Claude API reference for your project's language — Python, TypeScript, Java, Go, Ruby, C#, PHP, or cURL
  • Agent SDK reference for Python and TypeScript
  • Tool use patterns and streaming implementation
  • Message batches and structured outputs
  • Common pitfalls builders run into

Why We Need /claude-api

Building a Claude app inside Claude Code has been chaotic.

You write a few lines, forget how streaming works, open a browser tab, dig through the docs, come back, lose context, repeat.

/claude-api pulls the docs in with the same knowledge you would get from spending 30 minutes reading the API docs.

There is also an automatic activation behavior: if your project already imports anthropic, @anthropic-ai/sdk, or claude_agent_sdk

The skill activates on its own without you typing anything. Claude detects the import and loads the reference automatically.

Setting It Up

Getting /claude-api running takes less than a minute. Here is exactly what you need.

Prerequisites

  • Claude Code installed and updated to v2.1.69 or later
  • An Anthropic API key set in your environment

If you are not on the latest version, update first:

claude update
Claude Code /claude-api

Invoking the Skill

Open Claude Code in your project folder and type:

Claude Code /claude-api

The first time I ran it on an empty directory folder, the response was :

● The project directory appears to be empty.
Which language would you like to use for your Claude API integration?

  1. Python
  2. TypeScript / JavaScript
  3. Java / Kotlin / Scala
  4. Go
  5. Ruby
  6. C#
  7. PHP
  8. cURL / raw HTTP

  Also, what would you like to build? (e.g., a chatbot, a tool-use agent,
structured data extraction, batch
  processing, etc.)

If your project is Python-based, it loads the Python SDK reference. and if its TypeScript project, it loads the TypeScript SDK. The language detection is automatic.

Supported Languages

/claude-api covers the full range of languages Anthropic supports:

  • Python
  • TypeScript
  • Java
  • Go
  • Ruby
  • C#
  • PHP
  • cURL

For Python and TypeScript, it also loads the Agent SDK reference on top of the standard API docs, giving you deeper coverage for building agentic workflows.

Auto-Activation

If your codebase already has Anthropic imports, you do not even need to type /claude-api.

Claude detects these imports and activates the skill automatically:

Testing Auto-Activation

Now let's test with a Python file. You can create a test directory and a simple Python file with the line — import anthropic.

mkdir claude-api-slash-command && cd claude-api-slash-command
echo "import anthropic" > app.py
claude

Building a Simple Claude App With /claude-api

Let's build a simple Python CLI chatbot using the Anthropic SDK, and let /claude-api guide the entire build.

The goal is a script that takes your input, sends it to Claude, and streams the response back in real time.

Project Setup

Create a fresh project folder and open Claude Code:

mkdir claude-chat-cli && cd claude-chat-cli
claude

Now invoke the skill:

/claude-api

Since this is a fresh folder with no files yet, you can tell Claude which language you are working with:

/claude-api python
Claude Code /claude-api

It immediately spins up the app with the right SDK :

Claude Code /claude-api

Alternative: Ask Claude to Scaffold the App

With the skill active, ask Claude :

Build me a simple CLI chatbot that uses the Anthropic SDK.
It should take user input, send it to Claude, and stream the response.

Because /claude-api is loaded, Claude will get the streaming implementation right on the first try ; correct method names, and proper event handling.

Final Thoughts

/claude-api is a good addition to Claude Code, which impacts your Claude apps' build speed.

If you are building anything that touches the Anthropic API, this skill is the best addition to your workflow.

Having the SDK loaded into the context means Claude validates your implementation as you go, helping catch the small mistakes before they become debugging nightmares.
