One time, I accompanied my younger sibling to one of the shopping centers in my city. My sibling is a student at a pondok pesantren, which is like a islamic boarding school, so they rarely come home. Usually, my sibling comes home once a month, or every two weeks. So whenever there's a holiday, I usually take them around the city, just to chat while riding the motorbike, help them shop for school supplies, try some street food, or stop by a bookstore.
That day, we happened to stop at a store to buy some snacks, and it seemed like my sibling already knew what snack I was going to pick. Yep, I always choose the same snack whenever I get the chance to pick snacks or drinks. According to my sibling, that's really boring. But I genuinely enjoy that repeated choice I keep making.
"You're picking that again? Try something new for once. This one's good, you know," said my sibling.
"You get that one, and I'll stick with this. I'll try yours later. If I like it, maybe I'll buy it next time."
That's the kind of conversation we always have whenever we end up in a snack or food store.
My sibling is the kind of person who loves trying new things. I'm like that too, but with some things, I tend to stick to the same choices. If I were to say it in a romantic way,
"No matter how many things I encounter, I always come back to you in the end."
*But that line isn't meant to be romantic in relationship, cuz i haven't haha.
Maybe a lot of us feel the same way, we like listening to the same songs over and over again, going to the same cafe, buying the same perfume scent, visiting the same bookstore, or eating the same food. Maybe it's because we feel comfortable with the taste, the place, or the smell, or maybe we're just too tired to keep adapting to new things.
Is this one of our coping mechanisms to avoid disappointment, pain, and the exhaustion that comes from trying, meeting, and experiencing new things? Or is it actually a strength, the ability to love something for a long time without easily being swayed?
What about you? What is it that keeps you coming back to the same choice, even after exploring other options?
