Hi wonderful creators! I hope your week is going well.
I wanted to share another How to Prompt Like a Pro post, because this topic has turned out to be a pretty popular one. And honestly, it makes sense, one of the biggest questions people have around AI art is how to actually make money with it.
A big part of that comes down to creating sell-ready images. By that, I mean images that already look clean, professional, and polished right out of the generator, without needing tons of editing, fixing, or re-rolling to get something usable.
Just to be fully transparent: I don't personally sell AI images or AI art on marketplaces. My focus is on sharing tips, strategies, and prompts to help you create and sell your own work. Because of that, I don't have specific recommendations for selling platforms. Many people use Etsy, and Gumroad is also popular, but I always recommend doing your own research to figure out which platform works best for your goals.
One thing I still see a lot โ especially in Midjourney prompts โ is heavy use of phrases like ultra-realistic, hyper-realistic, masterpiece, and similar language. It's clear that many people are hoping to create impressive artwork they can sell, which I completely understand. As an artist myself, the dream of making a living from art is very real.
For me, though, I've found that I really enjoy writing about art and helping other people create and sell their own work. That's where my focus is now.
I do share sell-ready AI image prompts and e-books on my Patreon. Paying members get access to full collections of prompts, along with tips and techniques that work in Midjourney (and can usually be adapted for other AI image generators as well). I personally test and refine every prompt so the results come out clean, professional, and ready to use, without endless tweaking.
The idea is that you can copy a prompt, personalize it, and quickly create your own products, whether that's coloring book pages, nursery art, wall art, or whatever you're interested in selling.
How to Create Sell-Ready AI Images
A lot of what makes an image sell-ready comes down to a few core principles. AI image generation has improved a lot since it first became widely available, so creating professional-looking images is much more achievable now. Still, if you're feeling stuck or frustrated, these are the guidelines I've found most useful.
First: keep your prompts short and to the point. I don't get overly specific or write long paragraphs. AI doesn't understand emotion the way humans do, it understands vocabulary. It works best with concepts it can connect to visual references it has been trained on.
For example, prompts like "make me an image that feels comforting and peaceful" are often too abstract. Instead, focus on concrete, visual ideas. Simple subjects work extremely well. You don't need to overcomplicate things.
This is also where learning a bit of artistic language can really help. You don't need an art degree, but understanding basic styles and terms gives the AI something solid and familiar to reference. AI has been trained on massive amounts of artwork, so including recognizable styles can lead to much stronger results.
If you want soft, painterly imagery, think in terms of impressionism. If you want bold texture and movement, lean toward expressionism. If you're aiming for dreamlike or unusual visuals, surrealist language can help guide the output. These are all visual ideas the AI can actually recognize.
If you want to go deeper into this, I share much more detailed guidance on Patreon. But if your goal is simply to start creating images quickly, my top advice is this: use simple formulas.
I share prompt formulas, and many other AI artists do as well. These are essentially plug-and-play structures you can drop into your image generator, customize slightly, and get strong results without overthinking the process. I'll include a few example formulas at the end of this post to help you get started.
If you're creating realistic or photography-style images to sell, it's also helpful to understand basic photography concepts, especially lighting. I've written a separate post here on Medium about lighting effects you can add to prompts to make images look more polished and professional. Lighting, composition, and simple posing go a long way.
Again, the key is focus. Keep prompts clear, specific, and visually grounded.
Five tips to help you generate Sell-Ready AI Images:
1. Aim for Clean, Not Impressive
An image doesn't need to be flashy to sell, it needs to be usable. Clean compositions, simple backgrounds, and balanced layouts consistently perform better than overly complex or dramatic scenes. If something feels visually busy, it usually won't print or display well.
2. Use Visual Language the AI Understands
AI responds best to concrete, recognizable terms. Instead of subjective or abstract ideas like "masterpiece" or "emotional," describe what that looks like visually, soft lighting, neutral colors, gentle poses, or minimal elements. Clear visual language leads to predictable, professional results.
3. Keep Prompts Short and Focused
Long, overly detailed prompts often introduce visual clutter. A short, intentional prompt gives the AI fewer chances to add unnecessary elements. Focus on the subject, style, lighting, and overall mood, then stop.
4. Design with the Final Product in Mind
Always think about how the image will be used. Wall art, nursery prints, coloring pages, and digital downloads all have different needs. High contrast, clear edges, and simple compositions make images easier to print, resize, and sell.
5. Create Consistency Across a Collection
Sell-ready images work best in sets. Using similar color palettes, styles, and compositions helps your images feel cohesive and professional. Consistency makes your work look intentional and buyers notice.
Examples Prompt Forumals:
4. Minimalist Botanical Formula
Perfect for modern decor, planners, and digital downloads.
Formula:
[plant or flower], minimalist illustration, limited color palette, flat design, soft natural tones, centered composition, clean background,
Example:
purple iris, minimalist illustration, limited color palette, flat design, centered composition, clean background,

2. Realistic Photography-Style Formula
Great for mockups, lifestyle images, or stock-style visuals.
Formula:
[subject], realistic photography style, natural lighting, shallow depth of field, soft shadows, professional composition,
Example:
snowboarder, sport photography style, natural lighting, shallow depth of field, soft shadows, professional composition,

3. Abstract but Sell-Friendly Formula
Abstract that still works for decor (not chaos art).
Formula:
Abstract [shape or concept], modern abstract art style, cohesive color palette, smooth textures, balanced composition, contemporary
Example:
Abstract flowing shapes, modern abstract art style, cohesive earth-tone color palette, smooth textures, balanced composition, contemporary
Notice the word cohesive. That's your chaos-tamer.

Final Pro Tip (the quiet kind that matters)
If you ever wonder whether a prompt is "too simple," it usually isn't. Over-prompting is the fastest way to get messy, unsellable images. Clean inputs lead to clean outputs. The AI is not impressed by verbosity, it's impressed by clarity.
I hope these tips help you create images that feel pro
Professional and sell-ready โ whether that's for personal projects or a future AI-based business. Thanks so much for reading, and happy creating.
