During a weekend trip to Vigan City in January 2024, I noticed a name that seemed to be everywhere: Jerry Singson. His image was on countless paintings and posters around the city, sparking my curiosity about this local figure.
Jerry Singson is a big personality in Vigan City, known for his private zoo and an exhibition of his hunting trophies. The zoo, an unexpected find in this historic city, showcases an array of animals, while the exhibition displays an extensive collection of animals, each presented as a testament to his hunting prowess.
Walking through the exhibition felt like stepping into a different era. The trophies were displayed with an almost reverential pride, giving the impression of a man deeply invested in showcasing his achievements. It was hard to draw a parallel to the way some historical figures have presented themselves, and as a joke, it reminded me of the grandiose displays of power one might associate with a dictator from North Korea.
Despite the somewhat humorous comparison, Jerry Singson's influence in Vigan City is undeniable. His presence is felt throughout the city, whether through his self-aggrandizing displays of his contributions to the local community. My weekend in Vigan was certainly more memorable thanks to this larger-than-life character and his unique was of leaving a mark on the city.
