Something that happens to the best of us — layoffs have become the new normal in today's tech world. We wake up to the news of companies cutting jobs, scroll through a flood of "Open to Work" LinkedIn posts, and end the day knowing that tomorrow might bring more of the same. It's become so routine that it's easy to forget the real impact on those directly affected.
Let's be real. Getting hired in tech is no small feat these days. The process has become a maze of endless interview rounds — seven if you're lucky, eleven if you're aiming for big tech. And why? We've flooded the market with engineers, all chasing those dream salaries we've heard so much about. Now, we're competing against people with seven-plus years of experience for jobs that only require four. Just getting a call from a recruiter feels like a win.
But that's only the start of the grind. After a phone screening, the gauntlet begins. Five or six rounds of interviews, each with two brutal programming questions to solve in under 45 minutes. And, guess what? These questions rarely reflect anything you'll do in your actual job. Let's not forget those interviews where someone asks you to solve a problem in 20 minutes that took them two days to understand. Frustrating, right?
The truth is, that the tech hiring process has become a nightmare. And what makes it worse? The same companies that go through all this trouble to hire people will lay them off in a heartbeat—only to reopen the same positions a few months later. The cycle continues. Finding a new job in tech now takes about four months, but the uncertainty lingers long after.
Just because layoffs have become routine doesn't make them any less painful. Behind every layoff is someone with dreams, responsibilities, and a future to think about. My heart goes out to everyone navigating this tough time. It's hard, and no amount of motivational posts can change that.
