Haunted Desires

PROLOGUE

Lawson Grounds, Brașov, Transylvania, Romania Redaria Lawson, age 15

The sun was setting in the far distance, disappearing behind the canopy of the thick woods surrounding the Castle.

Two teenage girls — identical twins — were running around in the front garden as they were chasing fireflies with jars. One of the little girls ran ahead of the other sister, who yelled out, 'Vi, Wait up!' with a small giggle afterwards.

The one girl ahead — with shoulder length platinum hair and emerald-green eyes — turned around in the direction of her sister behind her; who was catching up with her.

"Come on, Aria; we have to catch as many fireflies as we can for our night lights."

Redaria had piercing blue eyes with platinum hair that hung on her lower back.

Redaria ran up to her sister and they laughed as they ran around catching more fireflies, trapping them in jars.

At that moment; Redaria dropped the jar, feeling a deep ache in her chest and fell to her knees in pain. She held her chest tightly as tears formed in her eyes and she whimpered out in pain.

"Aria, What's wrong? Please talk to me." Violette knelt down by her sister's side, pulling her into an embrace as she stared concerned at her twin.

"Redaria!" She shook her sister.

"It won't stop… Please make it stop." Redaria kept whispering over and over as covered her ears and closed her eyes; holding her head down.

"Make what stop? Aria, what is going on?" Violette's expression turned to confusion as she stared at her sister.

"The screams are loud and…I can… smell blood." Redaria said softly while rocking back and forth; as Violette looked around in panic.

"Aria, there are no screams, there is no blood." Violette says in a soothing and calming voice as she lifts her sister's head.

Redaria's gaze moved from her sister towards the mansion behind her. She jumped up and started running towards it.

An explosion erupted form within the building and Redaria was pushed back by the blast wave of the explosion, hitting her head against a statue.

Redaria's ears were ringing as she heard muffled noises in the distances. She sat up slowly and moaned in pain as she touched the back of her head. Her eyes felt heavy as she opened them, looking down at her hand covered in blood.

Her gaze fell back on the burning building in front of her. Her vision was blurred, and everything hurt as she stood up.

Redaria heard muffled screams in the distance and the ringing in her ears seemed to get louder as her head was spinning faster with every movement she made.

Violette caught Redaria before she fell backwards. She looked up at her sister and noticed her uncle Richter was behind them, staring at the burning mansion.

"Mother… Father… Where are they?" Redaria heard a voice asking in the distance.

Her uncle and sister stared down at her, and only then did she realize that the voice came from her lips. Uncle Richter only shook his head as he looked back at the flames.

Redaria looked in front of her, staring at the brick walls she called home devoured in flames. She pulled out of her sister's arms and moved forward towards the burning manor as she struggled to get up.

"Mother… Father… Where are you?!" She yelled as she tried to run into the flames.

Richter got a hold on her and held her back, keeping her away from any danger. He picked her up as she struggled against him and took the twins back towards the gardens.

Redaria pleaded to her uncle to let her go, as rage and overwhelming power rushed through her small body, turning her eyes a dark shade of red as a thirst for blood surfaced.

CHAPTER 1 — THE ROYAL COURTING

The Veiled Border Valley

Thunder roared in the distance as charcoal skies flickered with lightning. The wind howled as it blew the drapes into the chambers.

Selina looked up from her son lying in his crib; her gaze towards the balcony. She approached the railing and looked out over the mist-filled valleys below. The village was quiet with only a few candles that burned in windows.

The skies threatened to send a raging storm over the plains; and something ominous hung in the air. Selina sensed it — like a hand tightly around her heart, crushing it slowly.

Selina turned towards the hand-maiden; attending to the child, and ordered her to summer Selina's husband and Lord of Veil Castle — Xavier Sterling. Darkness was coming.

From the corner of her eye, she saw something flew into the room through the twisted branches spreading upward towards the roof; standing like pillars. Between the crib and the double doors landed a pile of feathered darkness.

Selina watched wide eyed in shock at the falcon-like beast — feathers bleeding night black, with golden streaks and an emerald glow shimmered across the skin. Steel reinforced talons and beak that craved flesh to tear apart.

It stood six feet tall as it turned its gaze towards Selina, giving her a narrowed glare before lurching forward and screeching in a threatening manner. At that moment the doors behind it flung open and Xavier stepped inside, before staggering in his steps as he faced the beast.

The creature's attention turned to Xavier as Selina looked at her beloved with unspoken words of love, pain and guilt. Their gazes met for but a moment, before steel dug deep into his side. Xavier groaned out in pain, feeling the burning pressure against his spine as the razor-sharp claws ripped out of his flesh, tearing it open.

Selina screamed out in horror as she watched the man she loved collapse to the floor; holding his wound as blood swept out the wound and pooled onto the rug covered wooden floor. Her feet moving forward to save him, but she is stopped by the creature spreading its wings outward and hissed fiercely at her, causing her to step back.

As the demon stalked towards her, it shifts as the feathers melt away and the blackness fades into a pelted coat covered in golden moss and green vines webbed across it. The falcon no more, in its stead an elder with salt and peppered hair and beard. He grabbed her by the throat; with his bloodied metal claws digging into her skin.

"Your insolence will bring the end to our reign, child." Her father sneered at her through gritted teeth. "Your rebellious treason ends here." He threw her onto the ground and walked towards the crib, looking down at the demon spawn that shared his blood.

Selina coughed as she breathed heavily; she looked up at Henry, pleading for him to show mercy to her lover and child. Xavier slipped in and out of consciousness, groaning in pain, unable to move.

"You will forsake this demon and disown this abomination you call a child." He approached Selina and lifted her chin to meet his cruel gaze. "You will marry Roathe Grayson and unite the divided Celtic bloodlines. Or I will kill them both and brand you as the traitor you are, stripping you of your power. A fate worse than death for a Druid." Henry demanded and grinned with satisfaction when he saw defeat behind her glossed over eyes, before releasing her from his deadly grip.

Selina looked at her beloved; bleeding out on the floor of their child's nursery. Her forbidden love caused this. Her choice to marry the one she loved and not the political match chosen for her. Her choice to love a Vampire and abandon her own kind. Her choice to conceive a half-breed child. And her choice to leave them behind and return to the prison known as the Druid Kingdom. To do her duty as the princess and take her place at the throne.

Selina agreed reluctantly, promising to end her devotion to love and accept her fate. Henry walked towards the balcony railing, arms behind his back; as Selina crept towards her loved one.

Their marks of Marriage held each other's Sigils in them, permanently marked white blended into the skin as ink held spells of eternal devotion. Vines looped around the left-hand ring finger across the top of the hand, wrapping around the arm in patterns and markings traveling across the shoulder and ended over the heart.

Silent spoken words faded into the distance as tears bled from her eyes. Their marriage vows — written over their skins — burned away as their bond was forsaken and casted away.

Ravenwood Compound, Knarravík, Norway, Scandinavia

Aria Ravenwood, age 25

Aria sits outside, under the old stone gazebo covered with plants and vines. She is sitting inside, on one of the benches, staring out at the moon with her right arm resting on the stonewall of the open view window.

Her mother, Mary is hosting another grand ball for her daughter's courtship, to ensure her future with a suitable husband.

Her family's legacy relies on an arranged marriage to stabilize the Royal family household.

Aria looks down as the memory of her father crosses her mind. She wishes more than anything that he could be there with her, maybe he would be able to talk some sense into her mother about ending the whole arranged marriage tradition.

The memory of watching the Crow Assassin strike down her father; haunted her. It happened seven years prior, in the attempt to end their bloodline. The Royal Heretic bloodline. Aria witnessed it from a distance; before she was pulled to safety. For she was the next target on the Assassins list.

Aria closes her eyes and lies her head on her arm, leaving her thoughts to run rampant in her mind.

Violette Lawson, age 25

Violette stares at Aria; a reflection of herself — dressed in a long silver dress with red lace lining and a slit on the left side that is open from her upper thigh; with silver heels on. Aria is beautiful and attracts a lot of attention with her unique features. After all, platinum hair isn't a very common colour, not among any species.

For that very reason Violette never takes off her hood in Public, and when she had to, she blackened her hair with charcoal. She moves in the shadows, invisible, undetected. Never letting her guard down, never letting anyone get close to her. Her purpose is to protect her sister from threats that is unbeknownst to her.

For the first time in ten years, Violette sets her gaze on her sister, who is unaware of her existence.

Violette watches Aria carefully as Mary introduces her to every man invited to this idiotic Courting ritual they call a ball. Violette notices that Aria is uncomfortable with the entire situation and actively tries to protest every introduction.

Aria disappears from her mother's side and hides by the buffet table, snacking on strawberries and chocolates and any sweet treats she could find.

During the evening Aria is forced to converse, dance and engage with many different suitors. All eager to get her and her power into their clutches.

Violette watches her every move throughout the evening, ready to protect her at any sign of a threat. Later in the evening, Aria slips out a backdoor and escapes into the compound's gardens.

"Stay on guard, Peter; I will rejoin you soon." Violette turns to her male companion as she puts her drink down. With her gaze on the back door, she moves to follow Aria.

"Violette, you know you cannot interact with her at this time." Peter grabs her arm and pulls her back gently.

"You are not here to advise me, Peter; you are here to protect me and my sister. Do your duty and keep your opinions to yourself, or you will be met by my flames." Violette looks at him with a threatening gaze as she releases herself from his gentle grip.

With that said, Violette walks away from Peter and in the direction of the back door where Aria disappeared through. She walks onto the back patio; towards the edge and descends the stairs leading into the lower garden.

The garden is dark, with only dimly lit lantern posts along the pathway. The garden is well maintained and in great conditions; the gardener should be very proud of his work.

Violette sniffs the air and listens for any movement as she lets her senses guide her towards her sister; whom she finds hiding in a stonewall structure in the shape of a gazebo with open spaces for windows. The entrance has two lanterns on each side and steps ascending into the gazebo. There are four lanterns burning inside situated one on each pillar inside the gazebo and all three window spaces has a bench placed in front of it with cushions lining it for comfort.

Violette lurks in the shadows within the trees behind the gazebo and is able to see Aria sitting in the back of the gazebo, on one of the benches with her arm rested on the stone wall and her head down on top of her arm.

Violette stands there staring at her sister, trying to feel her emotional state to ensure Aria is alright. She wants to approach her, but is uncertain how to do so.

"Will you please stop lurking and just approach me." Violette is startled by Aria's voice, who is now looking in her direction, "I have been sensing you watching me all evening, you know; your Aura radiates power."

Violette can't help the slight huff that comes from her lips; in surprise that her sister could sense her in her unawakened state of being. Violette steps out of the darkness and walks to the steps of the gazebo, ascending the steps onto the platform and walking to a window, staring out, shielding her face from touching the light.

"I apologize for disturbing your peace, princess; I only wanted to have the opportunity to introduce myself to you." Violette states without looking in her direction.

"Tell me then, should I be concerned that you chose the moment I am alone to do so? Or the fact you have not yet revealed yourself face to me." Her voice is calm and collected, and Violette cannot detect a whiff of fear in Aria.

Violette is quiet as she stares into darkness; listening for any sounds that are out of place in the forest and sniffing the air for any uninvited scents. Her vibrant vision scanning her surroundings for any unnatural movement; yet the gardens and the forests are quiet and there are no evidence of intruders lurking in the shadows.

"You need not be wary of me, princess; I mean you no harm." Violette gives a last glance over the landscape, before sighing and turning towards Aria, as she removes her hood.

Aria looks confused at Violette. Staring back at her, is her own reflection; yet not entirely the mirror image.

"I am Violette Lawson, and I have travelled far from Romania to see you, princess." Violette takes a seat on the bench and laces her fingers together, placed on her lap.

"Redaria Ravenwood, yet I assume you already knew that information?" Violette only nods and Aria continue "Please, call me Aria; I am not particularly fond of being addressed as princess."

Aria inspects the mysterious girl who is dressed in only dark colours; a plain black dress, with short heels and a cloak with a hood. With shoulder length platinum hair and emerald green orbs staring back at her. Violette has an arborescent burn — a fern-like pattern stretching from the side of her neck down to her chest. Indicating she had been struck by lightning. They usually disappear after twenty-four hours, yet her scar looks like it has been there for years.

"How can it be possible that you resemble me?" Aria finally asks, curiosity overcoming the better of her nature.

Violette looks down for a moment, uncertain of how to answer her sister; she hadn't thought this through and now is unable to speak the truth.

"At this moment, I cannot explain any of this to you. I shouldn't even be talking to you." Violette looks at her sister for a moment and all she wants to do, is take her somewhere where no one will reach her.

"Your life is in danger, Aria; everything you know about your family is a lie. In order to protect you, you were unable to know the truth. But not knowing who you really are only puts you in more danger." Violette moves closer to Aria, taking her hands into her own.

Aria looks at her confused, what does she mean everything she knows is a lie? This cannot be true; what does it mean then? Violette feels the rush of confused emotions coursing through her sister.

"I know all of this is confusing to you, Aria; but you are not just in danger from the Crows. There are more dangers in this world then what you were made aware of. You haven't awakened yet and that alone is danger in of its own."

"What are you talking about, awaken into what?" Aria struggles to understand what Violette is telling her.

Before Violette could answer, she senses a presence approaching. A tall figure ascends into the gazebo, with his gaze on the two mirror reflections.

"Violette, you shouldn't have revealed yourself." He seems upset as he walks towards her, grabbing her arm and pulling her to her feet. He says as he pulls her hood up, "We must take our leave." He avoids Aria's gaze as he tries to rush away with Violette.

Aria stares astounded at the tall figure as flashes of her dark past fills her mind.

"Peter?"

CHAPTER 2 — IN SEARCH OF HOPE

"Peter?" Aria's voice is laced with betrayal and disbelief.

Peter turns to her and looks at her with a look of shame and guilt. It has been seven years since he laid his eyes on the girl he once swore to protect.

"Ari…" his voice falters him as his gaze met the ground.

Tears start to form in Aria's eyes when she hears the old nickname she hasn't been addressed as since he left after her father's death.

Aria looks at Violette, who is just as confused as she is as she stares with a frown between Peter and Aria.

"How do you know each other?" she can't help the feeling of betrayal stinging in her heart as Violette turns to her sister

"He is my companion." She looks at Peter as she says, "Let's go." Before she turns to leave.

"You were told never to show your face here again, Peter; what are you doing here?" Aria asks and Violette stops in her tracks as she looks back at Peter intrigued; whose gaze is fixed on Aria ascending the steps of the gazebo.

"What is she talking about, Peter?" Violette cannot help her curiosity, she knew that Peter was aware of her sister, but she didn't know they had an intense history together.

"My father's death hangs on his head. He dishonoured his duty to the crown and was branded a traitor; banished from the North." Aria says softly as tears fall down her cheeks

"The truth is known to you, Ari. You were there; you witnessed what happened. Your father ordered me to your side, ordered me to protect you." Peter says defensively as he directs towards her.

"I was safe, no one could reach me, but you chose to leave him when he needed you and he paid with his life for your incompetence. And then you defied his orders by leaving me in the care of someone else. You left me alone when I needed you the most." Aria's pain drips in her voice like poison hard to swallow.

Peter looks down defeated whispering apologies.

Violette feels static in the air and senses something powerful emerging within Aria.

"Aria, I understand you loathe this man; but you cannot let that emotion control you. I need you to take a breath and calm yourself, please." Violette speaks in a soft and soothing voice, radiating her gentleness towards Aria.

Aria scoffs in disbelief, wiping her face as she shakes her head.

"He is going to cost you everything you love, Violette. He cannot be trusted; he is a traitor to the crown and he will pay for his betrayal with his life." Void blue flickers behind Aria's pupils.

Aria pulls out two knives from the strap around her thigh — that held four small kunai knives[1], that are accessible through the side slit of her dress. She holds the knives by the handles with the blades pointed down, holding her arms crossed with the blades pointing towards Violette and Peter as she stands on offense. Sparks arcing through her hand into the blades.

Aria feels pure rage coursing through her and something down deep inside starts to burn for a release. Her eye colour starts to form dark red rings around the pupils spreading out into the iris like branches.

Violette notices this and pushes Peter back as she slowly steps towards Aria with her hands raised to show Aria she means no harm.

"Aria, take a breath. This is not the way." Violette pleads with her not to attack.

Aria's vision turns red as her sight is focused on Peter; she attacks with speed and precise movement. Throwing a knife directly at Peter's head, but it misses when Violette catches it with the help of her enhanced vampiric speed.

"Enough!" She yells out with force, radiating her calm energy to stabilize Aria's chaotic energies.

Aria feels the energy that Violette is omitting entering her body and slowing down the burning rage inside her. The red in her eyes start to fade as black dots invaded her vision as it goes in and out of focus. Her head is spinning and she feels her body heat rising as sweat covers her skin.

"Aria, are you alright?" Violette looks concerned at her sister, and slowly approaches her.

Aria hears a voice like Violette's, but younger in the depths of her mind — Aria, What's wrong? Please talk to me. — Aria shakes her head in confusion towards the strange voice.

Violette reaches her hand out towards Aria's shoulder to comfort her, but pulls back when a spark of electricity licked her skin in defiance.

In that moment; Aria falls to her knees as she loses her balance, moaning in pain and fisting her chest tightly. A burning sensation like lava running through her arteries as her veins bulge out with lightning currents flashing within them. An ache throbbing with each beat of her heart.

Violette kneels beside Aria, taking her hands into her own. Electrical current flows into Violette, but she pushes the pain aside and focuses on helping her sister. Peter steps closer in an attempt to help, but Aria threatens against him when he approached. Violette demands with anger lacing her voice for him to take his leave.

The pain is too much to tolerate and Aria screams in agony as an electrical current implodes within her, causing her to succumb to the darkness pulling her in deep.

Lawson grounds, Brasov, Transylvania, Romania

Redaria Lawson, age 15

"Aria, you need to calm down." A deep muscular voice was heard in the distance, with heavy concern lacing the tone.

Redaria removed her hands that were covering her eyes and looked down at them shaking as they were sparking with electricity. She was sitting on the ground with her legs beneath her; looking up at her surroundings through blurred vision, yet everything seemed vibrant in colours. Focused even.

Flames surrounded her; completely engulfing her, yet she didn't fear the heat. It was comforting to her, welcoming even. She didn't burn from the fire; it danced on her skin in waves. The electricity arcing within the flames like branches, formed a layered aura around her. Nestling within her core, ready to explode at any moment.

"Aria, please…" She heard a voice like her own and looked in the direction, met by her reflection. Emerald orbs glimmered with tears as they stared back into Redaria's void-filled gaze.

"Violette…?" Redaria's voice came out estranged and barely audible to herself.

A deep and painful ache pounded within Redaria's chest as pure and powerful energy rushed through her veins; begging to be released. Redaria clenched her chest as she closed her eyes tight and lurched forward; screaming in pain.

Violette left Richter's side to help her sister as he tried to stop her, but it was too late. The moment Violette embraced Redaria, the power surging inside of her exploded. Lightning hit Violette in the chest first before it feathered up her neck, branding her skin. The shock-wave dispelled both of them backwards, knocking Violette unconscious and leaving Redaria disorientated.

Redaria breathed heavily and whimpered in pain as she laid on the ground in a semi-prone position. Vertigo overwhelmed her senses and pain coursed through her entire body from the blast impact. She slowly pressed her palms to the ground underneath her and pushed herself up carefully as she moved her legs in underneath her.

Her vision was out of focus and her ears were ringing. She felt a heavy pound in her head and blood trickling down the side of her face, from where she hit it against the ground.

"Violette…! Wake up…! Vi please…!" She heard a panicked voice in the distance; a deep voice belonging to a man.

She looked around, blinking and squinting to focus her vision on her surroundings. Once her vision became clear her blood ran cold; she saw her sister's lifeless body in the arms of their uncle. As he was embracing her, he rocked back and forth in slow — soothing motions.

"No…" the last thing she remembered was a flashing of light obscuring her vision. And the life; the energy flowing through her, leaving her body as she collapsed to the ground.

Lübeck, Schleswig-Holstein, Northern Germany

Violette Lawson, age 21

'My entire life was turned upside down in one day. The house I grew up in for fifteen years was burned to ashes; my parents were both murdered and I was separated from my sister because I was a threat to her life. I had to move in with my uncle and learn how to be a Vampire-Druid hybrid. Forbidden from reuniting with my sister –For us to remain protected until our ascension to our thrones.'

Violette ran down the street, towards the pier. The sun was slowly setting in the distance, perched on the horizon and casting its reflection over the waves of the ocean.

She needed to get to the docks as soon as possible to board the ship heading to the Northern Lands and she was running out of time. Guards along with Richter was searching for her to take her back to the prison that was the Sterling household.

Violette had to get away, she had to board the ship and sail across the ocean, she had to find her sister before it was too late.

Violette stood on a rooftop, scoping out the best route towards the docks, when she heard a loud crash in the distance behind her. She looked in the direction, someone commotion in the street, because the guards weren't paying attention to their surroundings. No, they had their sights on her.

She cursed under her breathe, before taking a step forward and dropped from the five-story building to the ground. She landed in perfect balance like a feline and immediately jumped into a sprint towards the docks.

Someone stepped into her and they both were knocked to the ground. As she sat up turning towards the person, her hood fell off and the young man in front of her stared at her with a dumbfounded look. His gaze goes behind her and she heard the guards in the distance.

Before she could react, the man grabbed her hand and pulled her after him as they ran away to safety. He pulled her into an alley and they hid behind big wooden crates. Violette closed her eyes and concentrated on her surroundings; vibrating a shielding aura from within her, to conceal their scents from Richter and the Guards.

She listened for specific movements, finding them by scent and waited until they were far past the docks, before releasing the shield. She was disorientated and went limp for a moment as her body felt heavy. Her knees gave in, but the man grabbed her shoulders and held her up against the wall gently for support.

"Woah, easy there," he said softly; as he cupped her cheek, looking into her eyes, he continued, "Are you alright?"

She looked between his eyes as she took short shallow breathes; focused on the sensation of his thumb caressing softly over her cheek.

"I'm fine." She said in a low voice as she softly nudged him backwards.

"Thank you for your assistance, I appreciate it with all my being. I must take my leave now, good day to you." She continues as she turned towards the entrance of the alley.

Violette stepped forward, ready to leave; before the man stepped in front of her

"So that's it, Aria; you're just going to pretend you don't even know me?" He said offended.

Violette stared at this young man in front of her for a moment, considering whether he might have known her sister or not. She didn't know this man, and didn't know if he could be trusted. But if he knew where her sister was; in a world unbeknownst to her, he could take her there.

"You seem to be addressing the wrong person. I do not know you, but perhaps you know my twin sister, Redaria." She stated as she remained calm in her demeanour towards this sudden upset person.

His frown was replaced by a look of realization as he spoke softly while looking down.

"I didn't know she had a…" his gaze found Violette again "Why aren't you with her?"

Violette knew it would have been a long shot; since they were across the oceans of where her sister would have been and if she was still alive that was. But she had a flicker of hope he would have known where her sister was.

"We were separated many years ago. I am trying to find her myself. That is why I need to get on that boat and leave for the Northern Lands." She sighed as she looked down; before she looked at him for a moment, "I do not know the Northern Lands as I have never travelled there before. If you knew my sister, then you must know the Lands. Would you be able to assist me and take me there in search of my sister?"

"I wish that I could help you, but I cannot go back to the North, I would be executed for treason, the moment I am caught on Northern soil." Shame and guilt were visible across his face as he averted his gaze.

Violette felt defeated and fearful for traveling alone, but she sympathized with him. She could understand the instinct of self-preservation and couldn't hold it against him; he was unable to help her and she had to face this journey alone.

"I understand fully, thank you again for helping me escape my pursuers. I must take my leave now, before they return." She stepped past him and made her way out of the alley, towards the docks.

Violette boarded the ship along with Captain Armoney; the captain of the ship, and he directed Violette towards her own private sleeping quarters, with all her belongings already brought in the previous day. As the ship left the docks she made her way to the quarter deck; wondering if she was doing the right thing as her gaze was fixed on the ocean.

She had spent weeks planning that trip; planning everything out perfectly without anyone's knowledge. The plan was to sneak away quietly without a trace, so that by the time her uncle realized she was gone, it would have been too late.

The plan however failed when Seth; a nephew of her uncle, showed up at the compound unexpectedly and caught her sneaking out as he went to her room to see her. He found the letter addressed to Richter on her bed and informed her uncle; not long after she was intercepted by the guards. Her uncle locked her in her room; because she refused to tell him why she tried to run away or where she was going, since she never specified it in her letter. She only said that she apologized for leaving, but she had to get away from the life that was chosen for her.

Violette managed to escape after hours of contemplation of using force to get away, but they knew she had escaped again and chased after her. Up until she ran into a kind stranger who helped her evade the guards and her uncle.

"I cannot promise that this will be a pleasant trip, or that we will find your sister. But I owe my life to her. Until my last breath, I will make it my sole mission to protect you and guide you back to Aria." She turned around to face the confident melody of a familiar voice. It's the young man that saved her.

"We need to be careful once we reach North. It isn't safe there for either one of us, so we need to have each other's backs and we need to trust in one another. We need to be invisible and move in the shadows." Violette felt a sense of relief and couldn't help embracing him in a tight hold.

"Thank you, for not letting me face this on my own." She took a step back and looked at the mysterious green-eyed, tall figure standing before her, sacrificing his life to reunite her with her sister

"I'm Violette Lawson."

He gave her a small reassuring smile as he cupped her cheek again, caressing her cheek softly with his thumb.

"I'm Peter Blackwell."

CHAPTER 3 — THE HOUSE OF RAVENWOOD

Ravenwood grounds, Knarravík, Norway, Scandinavia

Violet Lawson, age 25

'I came overseas to be reunited with my sister; and after months of searching, I finally found her. She was still stuck in her human form, and I couldn't bring myself to approach her. I spend the last four years as her guardian angel; whose presence was not known of. I remained in the shadows and kept my distance; eliminating any threat to her life before it could reach her. I kept my identity hidden as per Peter's instruction; as did he and we protected each other from our own dangers that followed our trail.'

Violette stares down at Aria who is lying unconscious in her arms, concern lacing her features. She looks up at Peter who is kneeling in front of her.

"The change has started. We need to get her back home, as soon as possible, before it's too late." Urgency is evident in her voice.

Peter also has concern lacing his features as he stands up uncertain of what to do. Violette looks down at her sister again, trying to wake her up.

"Peter, find Miss Ravenwood and inform her that the party is over and that her daughter is in need of medical assistance." Both Peter and Violette look startled in the direction from where the voice originated.

The man is tall with light black hair that is combed back and he is dressed in clerical clothing. Luminous grey eyes; that reflects light from the moon's glow, peering at them behind a pair of glasses.

Peter looks back at Violette; who nods at him in agreement with the mysterious man. Peter takes his leave and Violette returns her gaze to the figure in front of her; who kneels down beside her, looking at Aria.

"Uncle Carl, what are you doing here? How did you find us?" She asks him with a slight frown forming across her brows. He gives her a small reassuring smile as he cups her cheek,

"I have known your whereabouts for years, child. I knew you were safe with Peter as your guardian; but now it's time for me to take you home." His gaze falls down to Aria again, "Both of you."

Violette looks down at her sister, bursting into tears as she pulls her closer into an embrace as she reaches her breaking point.

Ravenwood compound, Knarravík, Norway, Scandinavia

Aria Ravenwood, age 25

Sunlight filters in from the window; through an open slit between the curtains, casting light over Aria's eyes. Her eyes flutter open and close as they adjust to the brightness. She moans in pain from the pounding ache in her head.

Aria sits up slowly as she rubs her eyes; looking around at her surroundings, and recognizes the room as her own. She sighs and looks down as she runs a hand through her lose hair.

There is a soft knock on the door and she looks up as she gives permission to enter.

"Good morning, young miss; how are we feeling today?" The door opens and her chamberlain; Sarah enters the room with a fresh towel and bathrobe.

"Like I might have a concussion." Aria pulls the covers aside as she moves to the edge of the bed; placing her feet firmly on the floor, but remains seated.

Sarah puts the fresh linen on the chaise at the foot of the bed and walks to the curtains; pulling them apart, causing Aria to shield her eyes from the light pouring into the room.

"I will let the apothecary bring you medicine after I had drawn you a bath, young miss. Will you come downstairs for breakfast or do you want it served to your room." Sarah says facing Aria

"You can bring it up to my room, Sarah, and thank you." Aria says as she runs a hand over her face.

Sarah gives a subtle bow, before heading towards the en-suite bathroom; drawing a bath with calming bath salts and lavender oil for a soothing hot bath. Afterwards she helps Aria get undressed and into the bathtub; taking her leave after placing the towel and bathrobe on the chair inside the bathroom.

Sarah makes her way back downstairs and into the kitchens, instructing the chef to make a light breakfast for the princess.

She gathers a set of teacups, along with a fresh pot of tea, some sugar, honey, milk and biscuits on a serving cart. She exits the kitchens with it; heading towards the drawing room, next to the entrance of the compound.

She knocks on the door, before entering the drawing room. Inside, Miss Ravenwood is seated along with Carl-Heinz and two of his sons, Leon and Owen. Sarah prepares four tea cups as desired for each and hands one cup to each person.

She informs Mary that Aria is awake and getting ready; and is instructed to send her to the gardens afterwards for reading. Sarah gives a small bow before retreating out of the room.

"I understand your hesitance to allow Aria to return back to Romania and leave her in my care, but we both know that it's time for her to come home. The Ascension has begun and it is not safe for her in the North anymore. She is in a vulnerable state and the Council will use that to overthrow the crown." Carl states as he looks at Mary.

"Ten years ago; when you showed up on my doorstep with that darling girl, I took her in and raised her as my own no questions asked. I kept the truth from her all those years; and now you expect me to tell her that I have been lying to her all this time. That Samuel had lied to her up until the day he was assassinated? You want to take her away from the only life she knows to go back to a world that will destroy her?" Mary says as she sets her cup down on the small coffee table.

Carl looks at his sons and excused them from the room. They oblige and leave the room; being escorted to the lower gardens as per instructed.

"The matter of fact is; Aria and Violette are the only surviving Heirs to the Heretic throne, and they are the only surviving Heirs to the Pureblood throne. Aria needs to be reunited with her sister and complete her transformation in her place of birth, so that they both can take their place in the Hierarchy of the Shadow-realm. I am being polite engaging in this meeting with you; but do not mistake my intentions, Mary. I do not need your permission to take Aria back to Romania. I left her in your care, but I am still her legal guardian as appointed by her parents." Carl cleans his glasses as he bluntly states.

"Aria will come live in my household; where she will be guarded by my sons, who all will protect her with their lives. With the rising threats of the Gracewood Line and the crow assassins, we cannot risk her safety anymore. I know you only wish to protect her Mary; but sending her to Romania to be among her kind, that is how you will protect her. I have already arranged for twenty of my best soldiers to be transferred to the North. They will be here in a few days and stay indefinitely to protect your household; and to further advance your platoon's skills. Peter Blackwell will also remain here as your personal guardian. He has completed the proper training; under my command for the last seven years, to handle any and all situation."

Mary knows this is the only way to protect her daughter from the ever-growing threats against her life. She knew this day would come to past; she had just hoped that it they would have eradicated the treat by now.

Aria is dressed in a blue and white dress, covered in decorative blue ribbons and white flowers. It has frock underneath making it standout in a puffed skirt slightly; and the corset of the dress is tied with laces at the back which Sarah helped her tighten. The dress is paired with a pair of white pumps that has short heels and straps clipping at the side, around her ankles.

Aria does her make-up with all natural colours and Sarah braided two fishtails with the roots of her hair; inserting two blue ribbons and leaving the rest of her hair lose in their natural curls.

Aria takes a seat at the two seated table; standing by the window in the corner of her room next to the balcony doors, where Sarah placed her food down for her to enjoy. Sarah exiting the room to take the dirty laundry to the laundry room to be washed.

Sarah locates Albert — the head of the butler service — and asks him to gather a selection of books for the young Miss to read in the gardens. She returns to Aria's chambers afterwards in her service.

"Where will I find my mother; I wish to speak to her?" Aria have been left in the dark for far too long and she wants answers. Starting with who Violette is; and why she said everything Aria knew was a lie?

"Your mother is in the drawing room, attending a meeting. Young Miss will have to wait for her to conclude her business, before you can see her. She instructed for you to wait in the gardens for her; Albert will be waiting for you with a selection of books and a fresh pot of tea to serve." Sarah answers as she is making the bed.

Aria looks out the window as she thinks about Violette, could her mother be in a meeting with her and Peter?

"With whom is she engaged in the meeting and what is the meeting about?" she questions.

"An Aristocrat from Romania, Lord Sterling." Sarah walks to Aria and puts her hand on her shoulder; giving it a soft squeeze, "There is no need for you to concern yourself with the matters of state; Albert is waiting for you in the garden, better not keep him waiting."

Aria sighs, before getting up and exiting her quarters alone; leaving Sarah to her business of maintaining the room. She descends the staircase to the first floor; heading towards the back of the house. Where she exits through the door — next to the big hall — leading onto the back patio revealing the gardens.

Albert greets her as she approaches him and takes a seat; with the lower gardens in her main view. She looks at the three selected books on the table as Albert pours her a cup of tea.

The selection of books is as follows:

· The Forever Queen, by Helen Hollick

· The Druids, by Peter Berresford Ellis

· A Tibetan Book of Spells

She picks up The Druids and opens it. Trying to focus her attention on her education; rather than the chaos unfolding within her chosen life.

Owen Sterling, age 30

"How are you holding up, brother?" Leon asks as they stand by the stone gazebo.

Owen stands leaning forward with his arms rested on the low wall as he rubs his hands together.

"As well as I can, I suppose. I am fucking nervous with anticipation to see her again after ten years." he hangs his head low as he lets out a heavy sigh. Owen feels his brother's comforting hand on his back,

"Everything will be alright, Owen. After today, Aria will be coming home; where she belongs." Leon reassures his brother.

Owen gives Leon a soft look, uncertain whether he is right or not. Leon just gives him a small smile as he nudges his brother's shoulder.

"It's just difficult, you know. She doesn't even remember who we are." Owen says as they scour the gardens, in search of something to keep them occupied.

They find themselves by the water fountain across the back patio's staircase. Where they remain patiently; in wait of their father to conclude his business with Lady Ravenwood.

"I guess we should just remind her of who we are and let her get familiar with us once again; after all, she will be staying with us indefinitely from now on; under father's care." Leon says with optimism lacing his voice.

"I hope you are right, brother; because I cannot lose her again. It broke me ten years ago and I cannot shake this ache in my heart that I would never get her back again." Owen stares intently into the water fountain.

He was in love with her; from the very moment he met her. He would have given up the world for her, if it meant he never had to lose her. Losing Aria felt worse than death.

Aria was missing for days before they found her, after the incident. She was in a hallucinated state and had no control of her abilities. Unable to distinguish reality from distorted perceptions; she went on defence as soon as anyone approached her.

Her power imploded and left her on the verge of death. She had to be rushed to the apothecary, where she remained for days unconscious. The apothecary did everything she could to save her, but she was not optimistic for a recovery.

Aria regained consciousness after a week, but was left with amnesia. The moment she pulled away from him and asked him who he was, he felt his heart breaking in his chest. That was the last time he saw her.

"Excuse me, but who are you and what is your purpose here?" The voice so familiar to Owen; like the melody his mother sang to him as a child. Sounds so cold and distant as he hears it now, pulling him from his thoughts of days long forgotten back into the present.

He turns towards the patio staircase; where a ghost from his past is staring at them as though they were strangers invading her lands.

Her gaze infiltrating Owen's soul as she stares intensely at him; the light cool breeze brushes past her and her intoxicating scent fills his nostrils. Reminding him of a past that will never come alight again.

"Leon Sterling, milady; and my brother Owen; Sons of Carl-Heinz Sterling." They both bow their head forward in a show of respect to her reigning position in the Shadow-Realm.

"Princess Redaria Ravenwood." Aria curtsies in response as she introduces herself. Her gaze wonders between the two young men, but ultimately finds its way back to Owen.

"We apologize if we have disrupted you in your study time, princess. We were dismissed to the gardens in wait of our father, whom is engaged in a meeting with the Lady of the Ravenwood household." Owen's gaze falls behind Aria.

Aria follows his direction, turning slightly towards where an elder man stood in a butler's uniform, holding two books at his side.

"I was dismissed to the gardens in wait of my mother as you; Albert brought books for me to read as entertainment." She looks back at the men as she slightly shook her head in what seems like annoyance. She looked over the landscape in a sigh.

"Yet, my mind won't stop wondering around; and he offers me no conversing to satisfy my interest." She turns to him with a slight 'no offense' comment, to which he responded with 'none taken, your majesty'.

Her gaze wonders between Leon and Owen for a moment; "Would you enjoy a cup of tea and engage with me; in wait of our respective parent?"

The two men look at each other and agree to join the princess on the patio. Aria ascends the staircase, urging them to follow her. They take their seats as Albert hands each a cup a tea.

The three engage in light conversation for a while as their parents conclude their business. And then finding all three on the patio under Albert's supervision.

Mary and Carl exchange looks before Carl steps forward; with the boys acknowledging his presence with respect. Carl's attention remains on Aria, by whom he kneels down.

Aria looks at the man kneeling in front of her; a stranger she had never met, yet he seemed to have known her for all her life.

"Aria, I know that you will not understand what is going to happen now; but I promise in time you will learn the truth and find your place in The Shadow-Realm. For that to happen you will be sent to Romania with me and my sons; where you will be part of my household and continue your studies under my care and protection."

Aria looks at Carl with disbelief and as though he had lost his mind. Her gaze falls to her mother who is standing behind Carl, next to Albert.

Her mother's gaze is low and a look of guilt is evident all over it.

"Mom…?"

CHAPTER 4 — LIES AND BETRAYAL

Violet Lawson, age 25

Peter's back slams against the wall hard; he groans in pain as he hits the floor, holding his nose as he curses under his breathe.

"I trusted you, Peter; and you have been lying to me since we met." Violette's skin bleeds flames as she scowls at Peter after punching him in the face.

"After Samuel was killed, Carl took me under his command. I spend three years being trained by him personally so that I one day can protect both of you as your personal guard. When you ran away; Carl knew where you were going and he sent me to intercept you. But he was unaware of the fact that I had no idea who you were; I really had no idea Aria had a twin, only a sister. And when I saw you; I just froze and forgot what my assignment was. I went to Carl alone where he was waiting for me to bring you to him, and I confessed to him what happened. He told me to go to you and to protect you with my life on your journey." Peter stands up, holding his hands up in surrender as he looks at Violette.

"I have been reporting back to him for the past four years and every time I left your side; I was meeting up with him for training while he was in the North for business. That is the truth, I have no more secrets from you." Guilt laced his features as he looks down in shame.

"You promised me you would never lie to me, Peter. That we needed to have each other's backs. But you stabbed me in mine when my guard was down the entire time. My sister was right about you." She clenched her fists as she looked away.

"Carl taught you well, because you are just like him. A lying and manipulating bastard." She voiced with a humourless laugh as she shakes her head in disappointment.

Violette turns away from him; walking away as tears form in her eyes. She trusted him with her life; and he was just another one of Carl-Heinz's pawns. There was a lot about that man that she didn't like. His manner of doing business pissed her off. But she couldn't deny having respect for the man; he was the best in his trade and was ruthless. He didn't see people; he saw pawns on a chest board and he is the master of the game. He was the head of his family for a reason; despite being the youngest heir.

She exits the compound they were currently residing at and descends the steps towards the carriage waiting for her. She gets in by the door that the footman has open for her and greets Seth sat in the back of the carriage and takes a seat next to him.

The footman climbs onto his horse; that is situated behind the carriage next to his footman companion already on his horse. The coachman guided the horses gently to move forward, riding towards the pier.

"I missed you these past four years. Visiting my uncle wasn't as exciting for me anymore." Seth says as he pulls her closer with an arm around her.

Violette and Seth have always been close; but they grew a lot closer to each other after her awakening. Seth spent a lot of time at his uncle's house as his apprentice and in that time, he also helped Violette learn how to be a Vampire. She struggled to maintain her control, yet she pretended she had full control. Seth found her one day in the woods, having a breakdown and burning half the forest down. He calmed her down and she told him that she hasn't been in control of her Pureblood side since she awakened; and that it has been causing her Druid powers to go out of control.

Seth promised her that he would help her learn control and he did. With his guidance she gained full control of both her Pureblood and Druid side; and they formed a bond with each other that was unbreakable. They both had feelings for each other; but neither ever acted on them or even said anything to anyone. They were afraid to lose each other because of it. They silently loved each other and just acted like friends.

"I missed you too. I'm sorry I didn't tell you I was running away; and I'm sorry for lying in my note for the reason I left. I just didn't want anyone to stop me." She looks at him with guilt written all over her face and with anticipation for his response.

"It's alright, Vi; I understand completely why you did it. Besides my father told me the truth after he got back from Germany. He told me that you left in search of your sister and he always kept me updated about you from what Peter informed him about." Seth looks at her and offers her a small smile

Violette felt a wave of anger for a moment towards Peter, before she focused her attention on Seth again.

"My father though hid the fact that he knew where you were from everyone else; he only told me because he knew how close we were. When he informed uncle Richter finally after four; before we set sail for the North, that he has known all this time where you were and that he was coming to bring both you and Aria home, Uncle Richter was more upset than I have ever seen him. He was about ready to kill my father." Seth tells as he leans his head back, reminiscing in the joy of the memory.

Violette is surprised by what Seth had just told her. Carl-Heinz never fails to amaze her. He knew where she was; but told no one in order to protect her and let her find her own way. He trusted her enough to allow her to go and explore the world on her own. Besides the traitor he sent with her to keep him informed. She will however confront Carl about that on a later date. Now wasn't the time or place for that. They had to get Aria back to Romania and to the security of the heavily guarded Sterling compound.

Violette sighs softly; knowing her death is waiting for her back home. Uncle Richter was going to put her six feet under for running away. She had remained silent and off the grid for four years; without anyone knowing her whereabouts or even knowing if she was still alive. And if she died, then that would leave Aria as the only surviving Heir to both the Pureblood throne and the Heretic throne. He was definitely going to kill her when he lands his gaze on her.

"How is Uncle Richter; is he still upset with me?" She asks with a soft laugh.

"Why do you think I came along on this trip? I wanted to spend your last days with you before Uncle ends you." Seth smiles at her teasingly.

She nudges him slightly as they both laugh together. Yes, he was definitely still upset with her and was going to end her life when he sees her.

The carriage comes to a stop at the docks and they exit after the footmen opens both doors of the carriage. They walk up to and board the ship as the footmen collects her luggage and place it in her private Quarters on board. Seth and Violette join the captain Rogers on the quarter deck to discuss safety measures taken for this trip to ensure the safety of the twins being in one place together.

Aria Ravenwood, age 25

After Mary and Carl-Heinz, informs Aria that she would be relocated to Romania to reside under the care and protection of Carl-Heinz; Aria's thoughts raced through her mind. To her knowledge, it seemed like her mother was sending her overseas to be married off and forgotten.

Aria stormed off in anger with Mary on her heel; trying to calm the burning anger fired within Aria's soul.

"Is this to be my fate, then? Dismissed to a foreign country for an unspecified time." She spun around to face her mother in distraught. "Do you wish for me to be alone; promised to someone I do not know and become the collared pet of a Romanian prince? Is this the future my father sought for me?"

"My darling, girl; no. You are being sent to Romania for your protection, not by punishment. There is much you hold no knowledge to and the fault belongs to both Samuel and I. You are going home, Aria, to your place of birth." Mary caresses her daughter's cheek.

"What do you mean, mother?" Aria's gaze turned to confusion as a frowned took over her brows.

"You were brought to us when you were younger, Aria, by Carl-Heinz Sterling." Mary admits in disgrace as her gaze fell to the ground.

Sterling Ship

Aria stands on the quarter deck of the docked ship, gazing out over the open seas. She fiddles with the ring on her left hand — resembling the Ravenwood Bloodline — as thoughts races through her mind.

Her belongings are being loaded by the ship's crew along with necessities required for the thirteen-day trip. Leon and Owen are on the lower deck; dressed more casually than before, and they are fooling around while assisting the crew loading supplies.

Owen's gaze casually falls to Aria; whom reverts her gaze back to the open waters. A small curve forming around her lips as her cheeks lightly tint in a blush.

"You should remain cloaked until we reach open waters, Aria. Come, let me help you put this on." Carl approaches her along with the Captain of the Ship — Captain Evert Rogers.

Aria holds still as Carl pulls a cloak around her and ties it beneath her collar. He pulls the hood up to cover her face and gives her a gentle smile.

"How are you holding up, child?" He enquires and Aria looks slightly down, with a soft sigh.

"I wish I knew more, my thoughts won't stop circling and I'm frightened; I am trying to focus on my duty, but I honestly haven't the slightest idea what that is anymore." She looks up at him with a soft smile, before looking out to the sea again. "I have never travelled on the open waters before; anything that I should expect?"

"You get sea sick, we could hit rough storms or we might run into pirates on the open waters. There are many possibilities Las, but worry not for we came prepared to handle anything that we might face. And you will be safe the entire journey." Captain Rogers states as he traces a compass over a map, and corresponding the map with the skies and his surroundings.

Aria nods in understanding and the captain motions for Carl to approach him and shows him something on the map as they converse over details about the trip.

She walks down the wooden steps and meets up with Leon and Owen; who are tying ropes on the deck as they laugh and play around.

Leon notices Aria approaching them, from behind his brother and steps around his brother as he smirks at Aria.

"Well-well; hello princess, have you come to watch a real man hard at work." He flexes as Aria shakes her head at him laughing.

"What can we do for you, Aria?" Owen asks as he pushes his brother out the way.

"What is Romania like; if I am to make a new home there then I should know more about the place, should I?" Aria asks as she fiddles with her hands.

Owen gestures for her to take a seat on a wooden crate as he and Leon continue to tie ropes from the sail to the side of the boat.

"Romania is a beautiful and mysterious place. Mist-cloaked mountains, wild and dense forests inhabited by wolves and bears. A place of deep woods, with many hidden castles, mansions and monasteries buried deep within the thick brush; rugged and untamed with ancient roads whispering with old magic." Owen tells Aria as she listens intently.

"Winters are long and harsh though, heavy snow with freezing winds from the east. The rest of the year is better weather, but each comes with their downfalls and benefits. And the food is absolutely amazing, dishes like grilled meats, brânză cheese, polenta, pickled vegetables and sour soups. I promise, you will love it so much there. Romania is hearty and simple. Rooted." Leon tells as he winks at her.

"Our manor also has a big garden in the backyard, with a large greenhouse and outdoor vegetable garden. And we have horses that are kept in the stables. I can take you riding someday if you'd like?" Owen smiles at Aria as she thanks him for the offer.

Aria retires to her private chambers after some time; finding Sarah already there unpacking a few things for her to use during the journey. Aria sits down on the bed after removing the coat and stares out the window as she watches the ship pull away from the docks and leaving behind all she knew. Sarah was instructed by Aria's mother to stay by her side as her Lady in waiting.

Aria wished more than anything in this world that she did not have to leave the only home she knew; but she understood that she had no choice in the matter.

There was so much she still did not know; about the secrets everyone has been keeping from her. About who she really was and where she really came from, who here real parents were. Only to be left with more questions instead of answers. Only one thing echoing inside her head.

Everything is a lie…

CHAPTER 5 — THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING

Sterling Ship

Owen Sterling, age 30

Night falls as the ship quiets down for the evening. Captain Rogers and Carl-Heinz are conversing in private over a bottle of fine Northern wine; they're probably on their second or third bottle by this time of night. Most of the crew has turned in for the night, taking shifts to be on duty.

The air is cold as the wind howls rebelliously against the sails. The currents are pulling strong as the waves crash heavily against the wooden ship. The stars are scarcely visible through the thick clouds rolling in.

Owen is standing on the quarter deck; his elbows are leaned against the wooden railing as his gaze is caught in the far distance. His mind though is absent as his thoughts are trapped with memories of a past he longed for.

Seth and Violette are on the lower deck, playing cards with the crew mates along with Leon. Laughter and conversations fill the quiet ship originating from the group.

Owen glances over just in time to watch Violette nuzzling closer to Seth for warmth against the cool air, and his heart fill with envy as he gazes back over the open water.

"Seth must be beaming with joy to have Violette back; he has been painfully dark and brooding without her around to keep him company." Leon approaches Owen and hands him a drink, which he gladly takes.

"He should cherish this time he has with her; he might just end up losing her…" Owen's voice trails off as he looks down at the cup in his hand, clenching it slightly.

"You know, because Uncle Richter might bury her alive once he gets a hold of her again." He gives a low subtle chuckle as he quickly reverts his dark thoughts.

Leon leans his back against the railing as he gives his brother a light nudge, to which Owen offers a small reassuring smile.

"Man, why is it so fucking cold tonight? This trip so far, we have had pleasant and beautiful weather, but now at the end of our trip we are hit with this freezing breeze." Leon states as he looks out over the ocean.

"I do not know, perhaps a storm is coming in from the distance." Owen says before taking a swig of his drink.

The skies are completely consumed by darkness as the hours pass on. The oceans are rough with each wave colliding with the ship hitting harder.

The heavy clouds flicker with violet lightning in the distance as a dark shadow looms over the waters.

Waiting in patience; hiding in the distance, invisible to the unknowing.

Bleeding iced mist that slowly spreads through the currents.

Forming like crystals intertwined together.

Shadows consumed like tar; creeping closer and closer towards the ship approaching from across the seas.

Leon looks over Owens shoulder, towards the lower deck, as the door leading to the private quarters opens.

"I thought she turned in for the night?" Leon mentions in a low breath and Owen turns to see Aria walking across the lower deck towards the railing, staring out towards the sea with a deep frown evident across her brows.

Owen follows her gaze and tunes into his hunter eyes, scanning the atmosphere for anything aberrant.

"Aria, what's wrong?" They hear Violette's voice as she approaches her sister.

Aria looks at Violette with her back towards Owen and Leon as she shakes her head saying she does not know.

Aria turns her back to the sea preparing to leave; when she stops in her tracks, clenching her fists at her sides and looks down with her eyes closed.

Violette reaches towards her from behind in confusion and worry; but in that moment, Aria moves fast as she grabs Violette and pulls her back. She turns towards the sea and putting her palm up in front of her as a glowing blue circled shield takes shape instantly in front of her hand; just as a spear made of ice pierced against it, shattering.

Everyone remains motionless in shock; staring with blank faces as Aria's gaze is fixated in the distance.

She sensed something no one else saw coming. A shadowed figure creeping in closer.

Something hiding in plain sight.

Aria Ravenwood, age 25

Black fog bleeds in between dark, heavy clouds; hot violet arcs crackle deep within the black fog, slashing wildly and fierce between the clouds, flashing in the heart of the fog with a deep electrical violet light.

Cold iced mist pours onto the surface of the ocean, a layer of thick sharp ice spirals outward and spreads over the black water. Crystalizing as mist hits liquid.

Eyes piercing grey with pupils pulsating shades of violet in glowing auras, staring with intent and concentration; determination and dark motives evident behind that gaze.

'The end is coming…'

Aria's eyes shoot open and for a single moment, void-blue orbs glows from within her pupils illuminating the colour of her eyes further. She sits up and frowns in confusion as the glow fades away.

Something inside of her aches with a knowing feeling, an unsettling scratch inside like something bad is about to happen. She glances over to see Sarah still remains asleep.

She stands up ad exits her private quarters, making her way onto the lower deck of the ship. She walks to her right and stands by the railing with her hands on it as she looks out over the open waters.

The skies are thick with dark clouds arcing with violet static in the distance.

Aria frown as she stares deeply across the seas. She sees the shadows stalking over the water, but she is unsure whether it's natural or mystical.

"Aria, what's wrong?" Violette questions as she approaches from behind, glancing in the same direction as Aria.

"Do you see those shadows in the distance? There is something not right about them." Aria talks softly, more to herself than to anyone in specific.

Aria sighs and turns towards Violette, who stands on the right side of her.

"It's nothing, bear no mind to me." Aria walks to return to her chambers, only to stop dead in her tracks.

She closes her eyes as she hears a soft whistle of the wind. The sound of the air being slit by momentum.

"Violette, Look out!" She pulls Violette out of the way as she turns back towards the oceans, holding her palm to the air.

In a blink of an eye; a crackling vine-like spiral blooms from her palm. A storm-woven Sigil jagged like lightning, pulsing with a soft electric teal glow, roots spreading like branches outwards into electrical veined thorns hardening into a living barrier.

Like glass breaking, a spear of ice collides with the energy fuelled barrier, and with a crackle of frost and lightning the spear shatters with the raw and sudden force.

Silence fills the night sky, and for a brief moment it seems like the storm has passed. Though the moment is short lived.

From the hushed distance, it came; as if summoned, ice consumed the waves as it rapidly stalked up towards them. It surrounded the boat, shifting it and making it unstable in the crystallization of water beneath the hull. Capturing the wooden vessel in a tight grip, trapping them in the middle of the ocean.

Aria falls forward and grabs onto the railing, her gaze falls on the ice below, swallowing the wood beneath it as frozen shards rises above sea level.

She hears as the dark water still churns and pulses beneath, slamming the hull in muffled thunder. Cold, silent and absolute.

Aria looks around frantically, before being pulled away from the railing by Carl-Heinz. She looks up at him as he looks out over the oceans.

"They have come for Violette and I." Aria states towards Carl, who frown in confusion at her.

Over the iced layer, tar-like shadows are inching closer. Captain Rogers and his crew alongside Carl and his sons prepare to fight as they unholster their swords. Violette pulls Aria aside and begs her to find safety inside.

Leon and Owen approach them as Seth stands next to his father, watching the shadows gaining the distance.

Aria isn't paying attention to anything or anyone; except to what she is feeling inside, listening to her instincts.

Aria pushes everyone surrounding her out of the way as she also evades the attack from above, as a shadowed creature drops from the skies.

Aria turns to it behind her as she is on the floor. The creature snarls at her as she quickly finds her feet. Her eyes glows as she flicks her wrist to the side while opening her palm outwards.

A bolt of lightning arcs in her hand and starts to change shape, the bolt forms a handle of a sword in her palm as she grips her hand around it, and flips her wrist up as the blade takes form from hilt to tip.

The shadowed creature lunges with a hissed below as it clawed at her; but Aria side steps and whirls around before tearing through the creature with lightning leaping from the steel on command, lashing like a serpent.

The creature falls to the ground, torn in half. It crawls forward by gripping with its claws into the wood; ripping its body further apart as it gurgles out groans. Nearing Violette; whom is still in shock on the ground, staring wide eyed at the thing trying to consume her.

Aria walks up to it and plunges the tip of her sword through its head; tar splattering about as Aria looks at her frightened reflection, ordering her to get up.

More shadows coil up from the ice and claw their way up the wood, that groans in resistance to the abuse and frost crackling under their weight.

Aria meets them with a crack of thunder; blade alive with lightning, arcing wild. Shattering one, then another. The crew, Carl and his sons follow in suit, protecting the ship from the shadowed invaders. Together, they hold the line — storm, fang and fire against the creeping darkness.

Owen flips over the railing from above; slashing a creature mid-air, landing in a crouch as black blood strays around him. Leon moves like mist, blade slicing through a climbing creature before it shrieks.

A banshee like wail tears through the air as Violette sets it ablaze with her fire power, before ripping her blade vertically through another one.

Carl-Heinz stays by Aria's side, protecting her. Aria hears whispers, just below hearing, pulsing inside her mind as though they were her thoughts. Torment burning deep, driving madness to consume.

The creatures do not stop; they attack with veracious relentlessness. Aria lets go of the sword in her hand and it shatters upon hitting the floor, dissipating into nothing.

She claps her hands together hard; the sound echoes in the clouds above like thunder. She spreads her hands; pulling on lightning vines between them that twist like branches, forming a staff. It floats in front of her horizontality as lightning dances around it; looping around it as it sweeps in between the twisted vines. Arcs form a ball of crystalized electricity in the head of the staff; with vines holding it in place, like fingers.

Aria takes a hold of the staff, turning it vertically before she slams the butt of it into the floor hard. This waking the Mana in the crystal atop the staff; causing it to flare with a blinding, pulsing azure light as electrical arcs dances around the foot of the staff.

She speaks low; syllables sharp and ancient as she lifts the staff into the air and tracing a complex, circular Runic Sigil. She begins at the top of the arc, pulling it downward in sharp, sweeping motions. As she traces resistance is visible, as though cutting through thick glass. Trails of blue light follows the head of the staff, hanging in the air and 'locking' into place once the circuit is complete.

The Sigil consists of a large outer ring with an internal network of veins spiralling — triangles and runes — pulsing in sync with the crystal on the staff.

Once the Sigil is complete, she plunges the staff into the centre; swirling the staff around in a spiral, causing electrical friction to charge up. The Sigil's light pulses faster and harder, until she slams the butt of the staff to the floor again while raising her free hand up at the Sigil — activating it and causing it to explode into the atmosphere around them.

The electrical current crackles like a whip of lightning as electricity ripples through the atmosphere; arcing wildly and rapidly, consuming the shadows into piles of burned tar — evaporating them into nothing.

Lightning rages veraciously over the seas; striking the shadowed mist and punching through the ice. Breaking it into pieces, releasing the vessel from its deadly grip.

The heavy clouds pull back, revealing shimmering stars and a clearer sky. The thunder disappears into the background as the lightning slows it raging and calmly retreats back into the heavens.

The air grows silent as the temperatures start to elevate slowly. Melting the iced waters away and drowning the remainder of the shadows, banishing them back to the darkness.

The staff hits the floor, arcing as it dissolves into lightning before disappearing into thin air. Aria falls to her knees, before collapsing to her side on the wooden flood. Blood running from her nose as her eyes feels heavy. Hearing someone calling out her name before darkness consumes her.
