My most successful article on Medium is about penises.

I wish it wasn't. I wish one of my other articles, which I think contain very valuable information, had been best received. But it is not like that. The most successful article deals with a simple statistic about penises.

When I started writing on Medium I was broke. I wanted to make a little money as quickly as possible. In the beginning, I wrote about books, investing, health, and my earnings on medium. None of it worked really well. Probably because Medium is full of these articles. So I tried the next topic: Dating/ Sexual attraction. With success. Almost every article in this area brought a lot of views.

Relationships, dating, and sexual attraction seem to interest the readers a lot, I thought. Sex actually seems to sell. Then I came up with the idea of penises. In my experience with various topics, there was a good chance that it would be a success. Besides, it would be really funny if it actually worked.

What did I have to lose? So I wrote this article.

I think my experience with this article teaches several valuable lessons for anyone who wants to make more money on Medium.

No, it's not necessarily to write about penises.

• If you've already published a few articles on various topics, your stats will provide you with valuable information. I'm sure you can see a pattern. I'm sure there are topics that are better received and others that are worse. Write more about the popular topics and increase your chances of going viral. Conversely, you might want to stop writing about topics that aren't successful. For me, for example, that was my earnings. None of my articles about how much I earned on Medium brought me more than a few dollars.
• Go against the flow. There are some topics for which there are an incredible number of articles on Medium. I think that your chances of success are rather low. I'm talking about things like earnings reports, writing advice, or how to make money online. With more unusual topics, which nevertheless concern almost everyone and therefore are of interest to many people, you are better advised in my opinion.
