You know the saying "you are what you eat"?

Well, the truth is more like you are what you do.

If you study hard, you are a good student. If you read a lot, you are well-spoken. If you sit all day and watch TV, you need to fix your life.

I can guarantee that no one reading this does not do any of the bad habits I am going to mention.

The goal is not to be perfect but to at least be aware of the bad things we do so that we may overcome them.

Half of the time I am not even aware that I do these habits because they either skip my mind or seem harmful.

Without wasting more of your time, let's start.

Note: I'm starting to make more self-improvement posts, so if you are interested, drop me a follow.

20 Bad Habits Everyone Does

Hitting snooze

We've all been guilty of hitting the snooze button on our alarm clocks, thinking a few more minutes of sleep won't hurt. However, constantly hitting snooze can disrupt your sleep cycle and leave you feeling groggy throughout the day. It's important to establish a consistent sleep routine to ensure you wake up feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day.

One way you can ensure never hit snooze ever again is to put your phone on the other side of the room. That way, you are forced to get up to turn it off and at that point, you might as well get on with your day.

Not listening to opposing views

This might sound crazy, but hear me out. You don't know everything, and not only that, you might believe something completely wrong but don't want to listen because you are either scared or ignorant.

"No, no I am open-minded." You might be about some "vanilla" topics, but what about serious topics like politics and religion?

If you started coming up with excuses while reading this, that's exactly what I am talking about.

If you are so confident that you are right, then listen to the opposing side and instead of being judgmental, just listen.

Checking your phone right after you wake up

Many of us have developed a habit of reaching for our phones as soon as we open our eyes in the morning. However, starting your day by scrolling through social media or checking emails can lead to a loss of productivity and a decrease in focus. Instead, try incorporating a few moments of mindfulness or engaging in a morning routine that helps set a positive tone for the day ahead.

You spend the last 8 hours sleeping, you can wait another hour to check your phone.

Hanging out with bad influences

You know what they say; "You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with." We all accept that and yet we hang out with people who we have nothing in common with, who only try to bring us down.

You should ditch those friends and spend the next couple of months alone rather than spend the rest of your life with people who don't care about you or vice versa.

Lying to yourself

Being honest with oneself is crucial for personal growth and self-improvement. However, it's easy to fall into the trap of lying to ourselves about our capabilities, goals, or even our own mistakes. By acknowledging and accepting the truth, we can take the necessary steps toward making positive changes in our lives.

Judging people

Judging others without fully understanding their circumstances or experiences can be detrimental not only to them but also to ourselves. It hinders empathy and prevents us from forming genuine connections with others. Practicing empathy and open-mindedness allows us to foster meaningful relationships and create a more compassionate world.

Eating sugar

When you were a child, it was cute to ask your mom to buy you chocolate, but now seeing a grown man or woman fail to control themselves in front of a bag of chips is sad.

There is no such thing as "I am going to have just one piece and I can stop whenever I want to."

Have you ever thought about why you crave sugar and can't stop eating it once you start?

Long before we had highly processed foods, the sweetest thing we could eat would be fruit. And when you pick fruit, it goes bad quickly.

Your brain recognized that and as a survival mechanism made it so that when you tasted anything sweet, you had to eat it all; otherwise, it would go bad.

Being late

Constantly running late not only shows a lack of respect for other people's time but also adds unnecessary stress to our own lives. Being punctual demonstrates reliability and professionalism, allowing us to make the most out of our time and commitments.

Assuming the worst

Jumping to negative conclusions without considering alternative perspectives can lead to unnecessary worry and anxiety. It's important to practice positive thinking and give others the benefit of the doubt whenever possible.

Read into stoicism and focus on being mindful of your thoughts. The future is never certain, and even if you were sure the worst was going to happen, the only reason you assume it is bad is because you give it that label.

"Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom." — Epictetus

Giving unsolicited advice

While it may come from a place of good intentions, offering unsolicited advice can sometimes be perceived as intrusive or condescending. It's essential to respect others' boundaries and only provide advice when asked for it.

Being a 'YES' person

Saying 'yes' to every request or invitation can lead to feelings of overwhelm and burnout. It's important to set boundaries and prioritize our own well-being by learning to say 'no' when necessary.

Making excuses

Making excuses not only hinders personal growth but also prevents us from taking responsibility for our actions. By owning up to our mistakes and actively seeking solutions, we can learn from our experiences and move forward.

The more excuses you make, the more you will start believing your own lies. Then you will become the person who could have been a professional football player, but the coach didn't understand your unique play style or a millionaire, but you just missed this great idea and someone else took it…

Watching TV all-day

The same goes for your phone. Why do you constantly need to distract yourself? Have you ever sat down and asked yourself why do I constantly need to watch these things? What am I trying to hide/run away from?

It's not normal to want to be numbed by these things and never experience life.

Criticizing

Constantly criticizing others or ourselves creates a negative environment that breeds dissatisfaction and low self-esteem. Instead, focusing on constructive feedback and encouraging positive growth can foster personal development and stronger relationships.

Overthinking

Overthinking often leads to unnecessary stress and anxiety. Learning to manage racing thoughts by practicing mindfulness techniques or seeking professional help can help break the cycle of overthinking and promote mental well-being.

I suggest you read "The Power of Now" and start incorporating meditation into your everyday life. If you are unsure, read the book first, and your worldview might change.

Going to bed super late

Staying up late can disrupt your sleep schedule and leave you feeling tired and groggy the next day. It's important to establish a consistent bedtime routine and prioritize getting enough restful sleep each night. This can improve your overall well-being and help you feel more energized and focused throughout the day.

Bringing your phone into every room

Constantly having your phone with you can be a major distraction and hinder your productivity. It's easy to get caught up in checking notifications or scrolling through social media instead of focusing on important tasks. Consider designating specific times or areas where you can use your phone, allowing yourself uninterrupted periods of dedicated work or relaxation.

Talking instead of doing

While communication is important, excessive talking without taking action can lead to missed opportunities and unfulfilled goals. It's crucial to strike a balance between discussing ideas and implementing them. By setting clear goals and taking decisive steps towards achieving them, you can turn your aspirations into reality.

Eating fast food

Consuming fast food regularly can have negative effects on both your physical health and mental well-being. These types of meals are often high in unhealthy fats, sodium, and sugar while lacking essential nutrients. Incorporating a balanced diet with whole foods can provide you with the energy and nutrients needed for optimal performance throughout the day.

Feeling entitled

A sense of entitlement can hinder personal growth and create friction in relationships. It's important to recognize that no one is owed anything and that success and achievements are the result of hard work and dedication. Cultivating a mindset of gratitude and humility can lead to personal fulfillment and stronger connections with others.
