The AI had given me yet another man in a suit despite my increasingly specific prompts demanding a woman. This was not a glitch or my poor phrasing — it marked the latest battle in my exhausting war against AI systems that seem programmed to resist showing women in positions of power and prominence.

For months, I have documented this digital erasure across multiple AI platforms. What began as mild annoyance has transformed into a disturbing realization: these systems do not just accidentally perpetuate bias — they systematically remove women from the visual landscape while allowing men to exist freely in any context.

My blood boiled when I requested an image of a woman emerging from the sea — a common motif in art and literature. The AI refused, citing "policy violations." However, within seconds, it happily generated nearly identical images featuring men. How could a fully clothed woman emerging from water violate any reasonable policy when the same scenario with men does not raise a single red flag?

Each failed attempt to create images of powerful women, each rejection based on double standards, and each hour I wasted fighting these invisible barriers revealed a pattern too consistent to dismiss as coincidence or technical limitation. These AI systems actively suppress female representation in ways that never restrict men.

The Evidence Confirms the Pattern

Stanford researchers analyzed 10,000 images from popular AI generators and discovered that gender-neutral prompts produced male figures 71% of the time and female figures just 23% (Zhao et al. 245). The Gender Shades project found that images of men appeared 3.2 times more frequently across major platforms than women for profession-related searches (Buolamwini and Gebru 12).

MIT's Inioluwa Deborah Raji meticulously documented these double standards: "The data revealed stark asymmetries," she noted. "Companies apply safety filters inconsistently based on gender — they do not protect anyone, they simply enforce different standards for different bodies" (Raji and Buolamwini 87).

What makes this particularly maddening is that companies could fix these biases entirely. The technology exists to create a balanced representation. We lack the technical capability, but the corporate will to implement these solutions.

Real People Face Real Harm

I recently spoke with an artist who used AI to develop her portfolio. She described her mounting frustration with the barriers she encountered when creating images with women in active roles. "Every time I try to generate images of female athletes, I hit walls that don't exist when I switch to male figures," she told me. After weeks of fighting the system, she abandoned the AI tool altogether.

This goes far beyond hurt feelings — it creates economic disadvantages. When preparing materials for a presentation, I spent three times longer battling AI systems to produce appropriate representations of women than men. This additional labor — editing prompts, rejecting biased outputs, finding alternative sources — imposes an invisible tax primarily affecting women and those seeking diverse representation.

As Dr. Kate Crawford observes in her research, these "representation taxes" create uneven playing fields: "The additional cognitive and time costs of navigating biased systems fall disproportionately on those already marginalized" (Crawford 152).

People Make Deliberate Choices That Create Bias

AI does not develop biases out of nowhere. Human decisions shape these patterns:

Training Data Imbalance: AI models learn from internet datasets that already underrepresent women. However, tech companies have known about this problem for years and have not prioritized fixing it.

Asymmetric Safety Filters: Content moderation teams restrict female figures more than males. D'Ignazio and Klein observe, "These asymmetric standards recall historical patterns where societies constrain women's bodies under the guise of protection" (175).

Male-Dominated Decision Making: Men hold 74% of data and AI positions in the tech industry (World Economic Forum). Dr. Timnit Gebru revealed how companies classify representation concerns as "not priority bugs" despite their widespread impact (Gebru, "The Hierarchy of AI Development Priorities").

Let us speak plainly: these companies make conscious choices about what matters and what does not. The persistent erasure of women reflects their priorities.

The Stakes Extend Far Beyond Images

The consequences reach into every aspect of society:

Children Learn From What They See: When young people use AI and see primarily men in positions of power and influence, they internalize these patterns. AI now shapes education, embedding these biases into how children understand who belongs where.

Professionals Face Unequal Burdens: The fight for representation creates measurable economic costs. While men's images appear effortlessly, women entrepreneurs and professionals must invest additional time, money, and emotional labor for equal visibility.

We Risk Distorting History: AI increasingly curates our information landscape, choosing which stories we remember and which we forget. When I compare historical documentation with AI-generated summaries, I consistently find women's contributions minimized or erased.

Safety Gaps Endanger Lives: Systems primarily trained on male data miss critical issues affecting women, creating dangerous failures. Caroline Criado Perez documents how male-default thinking has compromised automobile safety, medical diagnoses, and crisis response systems (Criado Perez 112).

Fighting for Visibility

We can challenge this digital erasure:

As Users: Document disparities when encountering them and provide specific feedback to companies. Support platforms that demonstrate commitment to fair representation.

As Industry Leaders, we should Implement transparent evaluation metrics for gender representation, empower diverse development teams to address bias at its source, and create safety systems that do not disproportionately restrict women.

As Policymakers, we should Require transparency regarding representation metrics, fund research into fair representation technologies, and engage diverse stakeholders in developing appropriate standards.

Drawing the Line

The patterns we observe in AI-generated content stem from systemic biases and deliberate choices. While historical data imbalances contribute to the problem, the continued erasure of women — mainly as awareness grows — reveals how tech leaders choose not to prioritize fixing these issues.

When companies systematically diminish or remove women from AI-generated spaces on a scale resembling practices in gender-restrictive societies, we must respond with appropriate outrage. This isn't about pixels on screens — it concerns who gets to exist in our collective imagination of the future.

The writer Audre Lorde famously wrote, "Your silence will not protect you." Today, in the age of AI, their algorithms will not protect us either. Only our collective demand for change will ensure everyone remains visible in our increasingly AI-mediated world.
