I am an artist. I've been one for as long as I can remember, and detail is what gets me excited about art. After seeing all of the interesting creations being made using MidJourney's AI, I finally decided to try it for myself.

After wasting some of my free trial image prompts on some random junk that didn't give me anything interesting, I decided to go for something texture related and got these images.

They made me go Oooooo because of the colors and interesting pattern contrasts. At least, #1, #2, and #4 did. So, I decided to try some Variations.

I did Variations for #4 and #2. These are the images I got with that option.

As you can see, the original scales were the best in the small, 4-paneled image. The variation option broke them up and created a lot more imperfections in the pattern. I didn't like them, so I moved on to the other image variations.

The same thing happened here. #1 and #3 look like some fancy patterns that may not have formed naturally on a dragon. #2 looks like the dragon has got some issues. And #4 has some interesting symmetry going on.

I was running out of free trial images, so I went ahead and did some Upscales on my favorite ones.

Here are the images I got with that.

Check out the marbling in the colors… I'm digging this, but I'm really interested in where the AI sourced the parent image(s) since it was a text prompt that led to this. Hmmm…

I do really like the original of these scales, though the closeup seems a lot less clean than I'd have liked them to be. It's still interesting, though.

I really like how this one came out. The colors are really beautiful, and the pattern is asymmetrical enough to be interesting but draws your eyes to the unity of it. I love it.

Because I still had a couple of free image prompts before I used up my 25, I decided that I wanted to change the color of the prompt and got these…

I love blue, and these just make me drool. Cobalt, yes! And the textures really make me want to know what they would have looked like if I'd been able to Upscale them. Uuuugh… 25 just wasn't enough! Or, really, I wish I'd known to start out doing something like this to begin with.

Gold scales! YAS! They remind me a lot of gold filigree patterns. I really liked how these came out, as well, and wished that I could have done some Upscales on them, as well.

In Conclusion

Again, I ask where the AI is getting the source patterns for the images it creates. I've heard the source images are from the internet, human-created art and pictures that the AI pulls from to create something sort of like piecing a car together with stolen parts.

I'm not sure about you, but I thought that was…dishonest? Is the ethics different or better when an AI is doing it and not a human being?
