In a typical Money Medium fashion, you'll find in this article:
1. Screenshots and discussion around the $2/hour of reading rule
2. Thank you paragraph with lots of people tagged
3. Humblebragging
4. Several links to the 10,000 claps articleIf you're anything like me, you came for the first point, so I'm gonna start with 2 and 3 just in case you'd like to read my ramblings before I get to the tofu of this article. (I'm vegetarian sometimes.)
#2 — Gratitude — in order of appearance
I would like to thank:
- All the Medium writers for complaining — all the time — about the claps and their absence thereof. You folks inspired this satirical piece.
- The penis of Keanu Reeves seeing guy, Reuben Salsa, for triggering me to write the 10k article with the only tweet he sent in 2021!!
- The very BOF BOFace who edited, published, clapped and commented first. He even highlighted before David. That's saying something.
- My ever-so-kind writing buddy, Holly, aka editor fairy, for her sharp editing.
- It was a teamwork of 411 people, but RGomez was the one. Thank you for bringing me to 10k, RR.
To be clear, I'm keeping all the $ and not sharing any cents with the people above. Being gratituded like this should be more than enough!
#3 — Humblebragging
It's not a time for humbleness. I got 10,000 claps on one of my articles, and I want to CELEBRATE! 🥳
I'm a member of the clap-high club!
- Are you a member of the club too? => Drop your link in the comments!
- Do you want to become a member of this club? => Drop your link in the comments!
I'll read and clap to share the joy! 🥳
#1 — Screenshot to illustrate $$$ discussion
Based on the number of claps, you could think that this article brought me $1,000. Unfortunately, not.
This article targeted writers. They are known to be generous with their claps, much more than the average non-writing reader. However, the article did reach readers, and those who commented often mentioned they didn't even know it was possible to clap more than once!
At the moment of writing, the article has 10,147 claps from 414 people. That's an average of 24 claps per clapper. Look at a truly viral piece from Jessica or Sean, and you'll see it's usually below ten.
Another interesting statistic is that 1 out of 7 readers clapped! From my limited experience, this is very high. I have another article with 5.5k+ views, and it has "only" 113 fans (so 1 in 50, which fits other data points I have).
When it comes to money
95% of the almost 3k views are internal. With an average reading time of 2min 39 sec, the total reading time is 47h12min, and the $$$ amount is $97.
- This confirms the 2$/hour of reading time rule.
- It's also in line with the $0.03 per view.

Takeaway
If you want to be part of the clap-high club, it's easy, do like me and publish 500+ stories on Medium. It would be bad luck if none of them went (sort of) viral.
Conclusion
- If you enjoy reading or writing, join Medium. It's fun, there's a cool community, and you can earn some $.
- If you're looking for a reliable source of income from writing, Medium isn't the best investment of your time. Too much of a lottery.
