LEGO's latest Aston Martin is everything you ever wanted. 007 Made of bricks…

Believe it or not, I have just started watching the old James Bond movies. Luckily, a couple of years back I bought on a Black Friday deal the entire Blu-ray box-set, so now I can watch them all. I like box-sets. There's a certain completeness to them, you feel like you get to experience something in its entirety. For the most part, that is, as Hollywood now likes to reboot stuff, like The Matrix, which makes my previously complete box-set, incomplete. Argh.

But back to Mr. Vesper Martini and his adventures with the ladies, because if you ask me, that's what the movies are about. The ol' damsel in distress recipe, and at least half of us most certainly watch the movies because of the wide array of amazing looking ladies. Hey, God created beauty, I'm obliged to admire it. There are of course other aspects to the franchise as well — namely the cars, and this article is about the most iconic one from the 007 franchise — the classic Aston Martin DB5, which I believe first appeared in Goldfinger.

This actually isn't the first time LEGO launches this car in a set. Set #10262, a now retired Creator Expert, was the previous version. I never owned that, but seeing the new release makes me not regret that decision. What's truly special about the 2022 release of the set is first of all that it contains a minifig — a James Bond of course, the Daniel Craig incarnation to be more exact — and it's part of the Speed Champions series.

Why is this such a big deal? Firstly, Speed Champions sets are always highly affordable. The official retail price is usually 20–25 bucks, and the 007 Aston Martin DB5 is no exception. At just 25 euros, you get a superb little replica of the iconic car. And when I say replica, I truly mean that. Comparing the new #76911 set to the old Creator Expert release previously mentioned, I have to say the Speed Champions edition captures the original car's shape and overall feel much better than you'd expect from 298 pieces of LEGO bricks. That's literally a 1000 pieces less than the Creator Expert!

LEGO did an excellent job shrinking down James Bond's DB5 to a super-manageable size and affordable price.

And the good news don't stop there because there are a good few more things I really feel are worth mentioning, starting with an exceptional part-usage. Some really clever building solutions and new pieces that genuinely help the car look more authentic. When it comes to stickers, while there are some, they're actually not too bad, but I do seem to have got a better batch, as some fans out there clearly have a very visible difference in the shades of grey of the bricks and the stickers. Now, I would have preferred those to be transparent stickers, but I did not feel like sticking them on ruins the set. You also get an extra four pairs of number plates. This means you get a good bunch of spare chrome-lacquered 3×1 tiles.

Finally, the interior is like none other. Surprisingly detailed seats for such a small set, and this time we even get a seat in the back for that sexy lady minifig you probably already own.

As you always do with Speed Champions sets, you also get a wrench. I got so many wrenches by now, I could open a massive LEGO auto-repair shop! Luckily for us, one of the extra pieces does look like a small pistol, so you can get creative and use that instead. I think LEGO left it in there on purpose. 😉

I'd like to find faults in the 007 Aston Martin DB5 set, but I simply can't. One of the best value for money sets LEGO has ever released!

Hi there! 👋

Recently, I started a new publication — Bricks n' Brackets — dedicated to LEGO, tech and coding. It would mean a huge deal to me if you'd follow it, though only do so, if any of those topics pique your interest. You can also read more about why I started it and what my overall goal with it is. You can also join as a writer if you'd like, as long as you submit articles around those three topics. The publication also has a YouTube, Instagram and TikTok channel. Thank you, and may the gods of creativity and success guide your day!
