They say of Doctor Who that a person's favorite Doctor is the one they watched first. This holds true for any repeated character, in my observation. The quote I referenced might be an indicator of the rose-tinted nostalgia through which people view their favorites. Google Christopher Reeves Superman. He looks reasonably buff, until you then Google Arnold Schwarzenegger Mr. Olympia. Reeves is scrawny by comparison. I watched the Reeves' Superman in the cinema. It was a product of its time and that naive a production would simply fall flat today. I haven't seen the newest Superman, so I can't comment on the quality of the production. But most of the complaints I've heard have been ideological, rather than structural. Glad to not see that here. Modern superhero films have a lot of moving parts, not all of them make a better product. But we live in different times with different expectations. A lot of actually classic films wouldn't get off the ground today. Not because of ideology, but because of pacing. I liked Reeves Superman, but it wouldn't work today. Too slow. To politically naive.
