Peter Diamandis recently sat down with Stability AI CEO Emad Mostaque to discuss the transformative potential and possible dangers of artificial intelligence (AI). Their wide-ranging conversation covered many aspects of how AI will reshape society in the coming years.
Mostaque believes AI is set to disrupt many industries, from journalism to healthcare to entertainment. He predicts that within 5–10 years, every industry involving knowledge work will be "AI assisted." Doctors, lawyers, engineers and more will have AI tools enhancing their capabilities. This could lead to deflation as costs drop in fields like medicine.
However, the speakers also acknowledged the risks posed by more advanced AI, especially as it becomes more embedded in global infrastructure over the next decade. Issues like deep fakes impacting elections and bad actors accessing powerful AI models are real concerns.
Longer-term, the development of artificial general intelligence (AGI) — AI at human levels or beyond — presents unknown risks according to Mostaque. He advocates for "feeding AI better data" now by using diverse, high-quality training datasets rather than simply scraping internet data. This could tilt the development of AI in a more beneficial direction.
Regarding AGI, Mostaque believes the technology could emerge within 5–10 years, concurring with Ray Kurzweil's prediction of 2029. He is unsure if its impact will be utopian or catastrophic. Diamandis shares concerns about the near-term societal disruption from AI but remains optimistic longer-term. He believes if guided wisely, AI can uplift humanity.
As Mostaque states, "We're truly at the 99th level of the gameplay. We have hit the boss round." With AI progressing rapidly, the time to guide its development proactively could be short. More conversations on directing this powerful technology for good are needed now.
