A Poem About Lost Love

There's a hole in my heart I must mend A boater's bung might do — to stop the leak that sprung there Perhaps some epoxy or rubber cement — for lover's lament Bit's of twine or superglue might fix the thru-hull Some coagulant assists in slowing down the seepage Gauze and tape from the medical kit for sanitization But probably do nothing to ease this pain

There's a hole in my heart I must mend Rivets and sheet metal, used to shore it up Against future weakness Once hearts have been softened Hardening prevents recurring damage Much of my heart is repaired this way Hardened with silicon carbide, dyneema, and spider's silk Just a few more vulnerable spots left

There's a hole in my heart I must mend It was leaking out love for you, my friend For now, we are just that — friends
