Anxiety is SO MUCH more than "mindset." Your brain wants to keep you safe. When it's overfiring…. it's trying to prepare your body to defend itself.
Your heart beats faster, your breath becomes shallow, blood leaves your stomach to flow to your extremities…..
All of these things prepare your body to fight… to flight…. or as a last resort… to freeze so that you will not be eaten!
SO many people have not been given explanations about WHY they have anxiety. It's pretty hard to treat something you don't understand, right?
Anxiety can be influenced by all of the following:
Unresolved trauma… SO many people who come to me for anxiety actually have symptoms stemming from unresolved trauma. Maybe they don't even classify it as "trauma" because they didn't almost die. AND YET… their brain remembers the pain or emotional overwhelm and is constantly feeling "on alert" to prevent it from happening again. Guess what… NO PILL takes away trauma! Only resolving trauma stops anxiety built around past trauma.
Emotional dysregulation issues coming form not having learned to calm emotions as a child. How do you respond internally when emotions like vulnerability, fear, sadness, or anger come up? Can you comfort your own emotional states with compassion?…or do you shame yourself, shut down and ignore such feelings? If so, you're going to be anxious. These calming skills can be easily taught, when the need is identified.
Gut issues (The majority of seratonin is created in the gut)…. Gut issues (connected to Gene FUT2) often result in anxiety, as they disrupt neurotransmitter levels. There are definitely ways of repairing the gut and improving microbiome… but anti-anxiety meds certainly don't fix these issues.
Genetic Factors…. Yep! More than just the home you were raised in… some genetic factors make it more difficult to detox from stress. Knowing genetics allows you to supplement in ways that are just right for your makeup. Did you know the nutrigenomic testing can inform you as to what supplements are needed for YOUR system?
Food Sensitivities…. Based on your genetics, certain foods may be causing anxiety. It's pretty commonly known that things like gluten and dairy can be inflammatory… but who suspects the spinach???? That's right… certain people with histamine reactions to food can be sensitive to things like spinach, avacado and peppers (Genes AOC1 and HNMT). Again… knowing your genetics and knowing what to take in and what to avoid is key!
General Medical Conditions… Sometimes anxiety is a symptom of a general medical condition. You wouldn't shut off an alarm system going off in your home without exploring the source of the problem. Anxiety shouldn't be masked or avoided, because it often signals that there is some other issue that needs attention.
