Few years ago, I found myself grappling with chronic severe tonsillitis which not only made me unable to enjoy my favourite meals but also was a constant challenge for my well-being.
When I went to see the ENT doctor, surgery seemed like the only solution but my dynamic life had other plans. One day as I was looking for quick home and natural remedies, I chanced upon this so-called magical food sprout that appeared almost supernatural (Broccoli Sprout), a tiny yet hugely impactful dietary supplement.
My journey into the sprout began as an experiment driven by treatment-seeking. A leap of faith comes about from the great longing for healing. Half a year after incorporating these sprouts into my diet sometimes in smoothies, occasionally in salads and even occasionally just the way they are plain at times.
The result shocked me, because there was significant change. The chronic tonsillitis that used to be part of my life became history and I could eat without any complaint at all. It came as a realization — something like this small sprout brought change that looked somehow magical.
Sulforaphane's science
Broccoli sprouts hide sulforaphane buried deep down inside them which is famous substance known for its resourcefulness for human health benefits. Sulforaphane is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent playing a major role in our fight against oxidative stress and inflammation in our body systems.
This has been extensively researched regarding its neuroprotective effects including its ability to prevent conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and improve cognitive functioning. Additionally, apart from brain function, studies have shown sulforaphane can counteract cancer-causing effects, promote detoxification and boost immunity generally.
Sulforaphane, a natural compound found in broccoli and broccoli sprouts, has been shown to have immunomodulatory effects, potentially enhancing immune system function (Singh et al., 2014). Confirmations originated from sulforaphane gasping the Nrf2 pathway, a crucial manager of cellular defense system (Zhang, Tang, & Gonzalez, 2003). The excitation causing the growth of the many antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties was developed and hence the body strength to repulse the pathogens and reduce the oxidative stress was enhanced.
The same study above done showed that -in fact — sulforaphane might significantly improve both natural killer (NK) and T cell functions (cells of the immune system) in cases like cancer, thereby indicating it as a potential naive-immune-system-shaped product.
Nutritional powerhouse
Broccoli Sprouts are highly touted for their nutrient density; containing vitamins C , calcium iron among others . Their amazing feature is the concentration of sulforaphane which is way higher in sprouts than in adult broccoli. Recent studies has shown that the 3-day-old broccoli sprouts contain from 10 to 100 times higher levels of glucoraphanin, the precursor of sulforaphane, compared to mature broccoli heads (Fahey et al., 1997). This makes them an unrivalled source of this vital element making it easy for one's diet and well-being.
Adding broccoli sprouts to your nutrition
Broccoli sprouts in particular can be used as a delicious recipe ingredient for a wide variety of foods. They will definitely boost the nutritional value of your meals and health, whether they are blended into smoothies, mixed with salads, added to sandwiches or just eaten by themselves. This is due to the fact that when they are consumed raw, their sulforaphane content is preserved thus maximizing their health advantages.
Don't cut them or cook them at all; just eat them as they are — this is my advice. The small plant gets damaged when it's chewed or cut leading to an enzyme driven reaction between (glucoraphanin and myrosinase) resulting in an isothiocyanate called sulforaphane found in broccoli sprout. Myrosinase enzyme that converts glucoraphanin into sulforaphane gets released upon chewing or cutting the broccoli sprouts.
If you cook your broccoli sprout such as boiling it then there will be no effects of consuming this amazing sprout since myrosinase becomes deactivated because of heat among others. That's why I would suggest eating broccoli sprouts as they are rather than cooking them so you could get maximum benefits out of this magical vegetable.
Growing your own broccoli sprouts
Going on the journey of planting your own broccoli sprouts is both rewarding and straightforward. Here's step-by-step guide to help you grow this nutritional sprout at home:
- Select Very High Quality Seeds: Start with high-quality, organic broccoli sprouting seeds is so crucial to get the most out of this sprout (Buy on Amazon). Also when getting them delivered, Measure about 2–3 tablespoons of seeds and ensure they are free from contaminants and sterilized by soaking them in Water (Full jar), apple cider vinegar (1 Table spoon), and soap solution (1 Drop) for 10 minutes, rinse thoroughly (about 10 times).
- Soak the clean seeds in water: soak them in a jar of water, the jar should have filtered as seen in the picture (Buy on Amazon). Soak for 8 hours (Soaking overnight is preferable for me) at room temperature.
- Rinse and pour the water out every morning/evening: After soaking, rinse the seeds with fresh water to drain them thoroughly. Make sure that the position of the jar is tilted such that excess water can flow out.
- Do it again: Keep on rinsing and draining the seeds twice a day for around 5–7 days.
- Harvesting: Harvest the sprout once they have grown to your preferred length and their leaves have turned green. Give them one last rise, allow to drain, and get dry then enjoy!
- Storage: Put any unused sprouts in an airtight container in the fridge where they will stay fresh for two weeks at most.
My personal story and experience with broccoli sprouts has been a clear evidence of its transforming properties, at least for me. I tried to support my claim with some scientific papers, and my hope it is going to help you heal as well in case you are complaining of any immune issues.
The scientific investigation of sulforaphane and its immeasurable health advantages further substantiate this fact (healing fact) making it more and more imperative to adopt broccoli sprouts in our lives. In line with the progress in this small plant, we are progressively proceeding toward a world of well-being where living a healthy lifestyle becomes as effortless as gaining joy from a small but mighty sprout.
