Quora has just launched a partner program to rewards its writers. Quora's CEO Adam D'Angelo shared the following on Thursday (5th August) :

Today, we are launching two new subscription options for creators. We want to make sharing knowledge more financially sustainable for creators, which will in turn let them share more knowledge with the world.

We are on track to be cash-flow positive from ads alone

This is interesting from a business model perspective. Quora now will have two revenue sources: I) Ad revenue and II) Subscription fees. As we have seen with Medium, creators do not get anything if the reader is not a paid Medium member. That should not be the case with Quora+.

What is Quora?

Quora is an online questions & answer forum which feels increasingly like a search engine. You can post questions here, or answer existing ones. The purpose is to make sharing information easier.

Quora is highly ranked in Google. Anytime you would put a question in Google, you will get Quora links in the search response.

How it works

Quora will have two options for subscriptions:

Option 01: Subscription to Quora+ like Medium

  • Select content we have written for inclusion into a subscription bundle called Quora+
  • Quora will charge its subscribers monthly to give them access to all Quora+ content
  • Quora will then distribute this revenue to creators in proportion to subscribers consumer their content. This portion is similar to how Medium works.
  • Quora revenue will go to writers and spaces

Interestingly, Adam suggests that most Quora+ content will remain free to consume. Apparently, the Algorithm will decide which content is should be behind a paywall. The Algorithm will check which content can bring in more subscribers if it is behind a paywall.

Option 02: Subscription to Spaces only

  • We can set up specialized spaces for expert opinion and sharing knowledge.
  • When we set up a space, we can decide which price we want to charge. Quora will take 5% of that.

Additionally, Quora's algorithm will distribute our content to its 300M+ month visitors.

My Experience with Quora

I have written a few answers and articles in Quora. That's it. I am not a regular there. I have never promoted any of those answers either.

Interestingly, my responses have close to 5k views now.

I can imagine that if I am a regular contributor, my views will go up significantly. This is good news as I can share my expertise in that forum as well.
