🚀 My First Week in Power BI Development – An Eye-Opening Experience!
On February 9th, 2025, I began my Power BI development journey with DataJobsNaija, led by the incredible facilitator, Gbenga, Adeyemo, MCT, MCDA, and I have to say—it's been an eye-opener!
Before this, I thought Power BI was just about creating fancy dashboards and visuals. But after just one week, I've realized it's so much more than that. Here's what I learned:
🔹 Power Query – The Data Transformation Powerhouse Ever dealt with messy, inconsistent data? Power Query is the tool that helps clean, transform, and shape data before it even reaches your reports. Understanding this is like discovering the backstage magic of Power BI.
🔹 The Engine Behind Power Query Power Query isn't just a simple interface—it runs on a powerful engine using the M language. This knowledge helps me understand how data is processed under the hood, which is key for optimizing performance.
🔹 Normalization vs. Denormalization I used to think more tables meant better organization, but that's not always the case! Normalization (breaking data into smaller tables) is great for reducing redundancy, but denormalization (combining tables) often leads to better performance in Power BI. Striking the right balance is key!
🔹 Conceptual vs. Logical Data Models Before jumping into Power BI, it's crucial to understand how data should be structured. The conceptual model gives the big picture, while the logical model details the relationships and rules that make reports function correctly.
🔹 Optimization – Performance is Everything! A slow report is a useless report. Learning techniques to optimize queries, reduce load times, and improve efficiency is something I now realize will be crucial as I build more complex dashboards.
🔹 Distinct vs. Unique Counts – Small Detail, Big Difference At first, this seemed like a minor detail, but it's actually a game-changer. Distinct count helps when I need to count unique values across multiple columns, while unique count focuses only on a single column. Knowing when to use which can completely change report accuracy!
One week in, and I already see that Power BI is more than just a visualization tool—it's an entire ecosystem for data transformation, modeling, and performance optimization. I'm excited to keep learning and applying these skills!
