Ethereum is a cryptocurrency. Much like Bitcoin, it consists of data stored on a series of drives and networks. The primary difference is that Ethereum is designed to support third-party tokens. This includes alt coins, meme coins, and NFTs (non-fungible tokens). It is also prepared to halve on an unlimited schedule. This means that the blockchain will be verified indefinitely. New coins will be added to the network at each interval.
One of the greatest uses for Ethereum is its ability to be wrapped. This means that original coins are exchanged and burned (destroyed) for coins which retain a value of purpose. Think of this in the same way that the U.S. Mint collects and destroys old currency. Furthermore, what was once a weighted piece of gold is now a coin or a bill of equal value. The main difference here is that cryptocurrency is decentralized (democratized) and does not rely on bond, physical backing.
Notable instances of Ethereum changes the way that the DeFi (decentralized finance) network operates include the implementation of the Optimism network and NFT marketplaces such as OpenSea. Third-party wallets (cryptocurrency storage) like MetaMask, Base (formerly Coinbase Wallet), and Trust provide support for third-party coins and tokens which cannot be regularly found on exchanges like E-Trade and Crypto.com which are known for popularizing the use of cryptocurrency as a trade (investment) and security (long-term holding). Both networks have gas fees, the extra price of an exchange. Some exchanges offer special deals on exchanges, as well as wallets which support specific third-party exchanges.
