My first reaction would be 50% decrease in the download is a lot and it's concerning.
Then I would ask questions to understand the problem in greater detail.
- Have we seen some behaviour in the Repeat Users are they also not using it, have we seen some drop in retention?
- When this trend is going on? Is this sudden or Gradual? Highly likely it should be a sudden drop because a gradual 50% decline will get a lot of eyeballs and people should have spoken about it earlier
- What Device? Desktop or Mobile? What OS? Windows, Mac, Android or iOS?
- Is there any particular geography that is causing this issue
Technical/Reporting Issues
- Is reporting, dashboard, and telemetry data everything working fine or not?
- I would also check the Request per minute ( traffic ) to see if this is a telemetry or data issue or if something is off
Internal Issues
- The traffic in the Download funnel has reduced due to less expenditure on Paid Marketing or some growth slowness.
- Microsoft released some features or updates which has bloated the size of the SDK ( 4x ) and people are not downloading
- Recent updates have some OS requirements, making it unsupportable for many devices.
- Frequent Download Failure / Crashes while downloading the file
- Delisting of the Microsoft Teams from the Play store or App Store due to some violation of guidelines.
External Issues
- Competitors can release some good product which offers a lot of value proposition at half the cost as teams
- Some Data leaks or Privacy concerns which is putting Teams at a Negative End
- Microsoft team increased the Pricing drastically which caused a Huge decline in the downloads itself.
- Recession so people start cutting workforce and hence usage is also
- Regulatory changes by the countries in which organisations need to consider the in-house capability for messaging and connecting
