Before we dive in, let's clarify what hard and soft skills are.

  • Hard skills: You learn these through education and training — e.g. Python, Data Analysis, Project Management.
  • Soft skills: These are about how you interact with people and handle situations — e.g. listening well, staying calm in stressful situations, teamwork.

Now let's dive into how you can use ChatGPT to analyze gaps in your hard & soft skills.

Step 1: Find your target role in the industry where you want to transition into.

Example role: Product Manager & Example industry: Renewable energy.

You need to have some idea in your mind for step 2 & 3. Don't worry if it's not final, you can always come back to it again.

Then find 2–3 job specs and use the following steps to analyze each job spec.

Step 2: Use ChatGPT to create a table for hard skills and soft skills from the job spec.

Prompt: I'll give you a job spec. Can you analyze it and create a table listing both the hard and soft skills mentioned? Please rank these skills according to their importance for success in the role. Are you ready?

Copy-paste the job spec.

Outcome: ChatGPT will create a table of skills by level of importance.

Step 3: Provide your CV to ChatGPT to analyze what skills you already have and which ones are missing.

Prompt: Now, I will provide you with my resume for your analysis. Please add a column alongside the importance levels of the skills you previously identified. In this new column, indicate whether I possess each skill. Are you ready?

Now, paste your CV.

Outcome: You will have a table with the skills you have and the skills you are missing.

Note: Repeat this process for 2–3 job specs to get a realistic view.

Ok, now you have a clear overview of what you need to work on to make your career move. It could mean different actions, based on your situation:

a) You have the skills but forgot to mention them in your CV.

b) You don't have the skills and need to gain them.

But before you go and buy online courses to upskill yourself, spend 10 minutes and ask yourself these questions:

Will this role help me build skills that will be in high demand in the future?

Will I be able to increase my income if I continue to build my career?

What does the progression look like? Do I want to do that?

Spending too much time trying to figure out your passion is not the right approach, because we learn more by doing, not by thinking.

In the next newsletter, I will share 4 ways you can build the skills to bridge the gap and make your career change.

Until next time !
